Air Shootist's NRL22 Season So Far - A Mid-season Write-up

I feel like the PRS air rifle rules came about in part because some range owners think that an air rifle slug at 80-100 fpe will blow their targets apart.
Here are the pertinent PRS rules, with some commentary from me-

2.4.1 Airguns MUST follow all projectile speed restrictions as other rimfire divisions.
Since the only speed restriction is "Commercially available standard velocity .22lr ammunition", this leaves a lot of wiggle room. I mean, since air rifle slugs don't have their own power source, you could say that all pellets and slugs have a velocity of zero. I have never seen ammunition checked at a PRS rimfire match. And I saw (and heard) someone at a regional finale that was clearly shooting supersonic ammo. Maybe no one cared because he finished towards the bottom, but I guess if you have a poorly written, ambiguous rule then you don't have a strong desire to enforce it.

2.4.2 Projectiles must be mass produced. 22 and 25 caliber airguns can use pellets or slugs and cannot exceed a weight limit of 49 grains
So if you want to shoot Altaros ATP smooths at 49.5 grs, you better buy some sandpaper. And Altaros now lists those slugs as 50 grs. I wonder if anyone that shoots big PRS Rimfire matches with an air rifle has ever had their slugs weighed?

2.4.3 Projectiles must be mass produced. 30 caliber airguns are limited to ONLY pellets and cannot exceed a weight limit of 50 grains. NO slugs.
Can't cast your own slugs. Can't shoot .30 slugs (even if they fall under 49.5 gr), can't shoot my beloved 56 gr Zan pellets. So what they are really saying here is "Don't shoot a .30".

I think PRS could simplify this a lot by saying "All rimfire and air rifle ammo shall not exceed 128 fpe." To save you doing the math, that is a 40 gr bullet going 1200 fps, which feels like the high end of "standard velocity". Then the air rifle rules could be 1) No tether tanks, and 2) Mass produced projectiles. I guess you could future proof it by saying 55 gr maximum for air rifle projectiles, since someone might make a rifle that can accurately shoot a 60 grain slug at 980 fps while still balancing on a barricade and getting 12 shots per fill.

Wow, I just did the math while looking some stuff up. I have shot 36 PRS rimfire and NRL22 matches this year. And I think 2 of them were with an air rifle. On the one hand, I am clearly not any kind of expert when it comes to shooting these types of matches with an air rifle. On the other hand, there's a couple of reasons why I'm not shooting these matches with an air rifle, and the PRS rules are a pretty big part of those reasons. I still maintain that the monthly NRL22 matches are the best place for air rifles, but I'm worried that I might accidentally qualify for the NRL22 championships and get my butt handed to me from the rimfire shooters.

Thanks. I didn't realize they'd put all those rules in place.

Looks like Altaros might need to start to consider producing 48 gr 22 cal and 25 cal slugs.

No mag in the world would fit a 48 gr .22, or rifle be able to send it with enough energy. Instead of worrying about weight, consider the BC / performance of the projectile. Altaros Kings already outperform rimfire ammo. They are limited by the rifles. I would much rather have improved ergonomics in a competition rifle while maintaining performance. The DRS is still a compromise.

(this thread is really off track lol)

Longer internal mag length, more FPE, more BC, sure it's possible and I think these will get there in concert eventually. Doesn't Altaros already have stick mags he used for his gun?! It's a different way of going about it but it gets the job done.

Build a field and they will come. Next gen Precision Rifle pcp's, who knows what'll happen, but NRL and or PRS will probably change their rules again as a hindrance.

The latter, Yep, or even increase of performance.....

Gotta hand it to FX for going down this road concerning these games using airguns to begin with.

The M24 is getting there. It needs a bit more air capacity to have the power and shot count for competition. The new chassis is awesome. So I'm excited to see where they go in the next ~2 years.

Quick update here. Erik and I just shot the Feb COF at Beloit Rifle Club. Tightest match I've ever seen with the top 4 guys all tied up in impacts so it came down to the timed stage. This, unfortunately relegated me to 4th due to my insistence on taking my squish bag to the timed stage - which wasn't really necessary because it was a tank trap but I thought it would be helpful for shooting off the low center positions which appeared twice in the stage. Despite cleaning the stage, I fidgeted with that bag too much and it cost me time and likely the match as I can usually shoot tank traps really fast. I did get 3 cleans out of the 5 stages which was definitely pretty cash money. I missed 2 a piece on the first two stages, though. One less miss and it could have been my day!

Sooooo I had a bit of an odd thing happen to me at the sight in. My gun was like 13 MOA low and 7 MOA to the right! I got it back on target and really fought the mental block which was me wondering if my gun was gonna be OK and what caused that shift. Instead of worrying I just sent it! But I think what happened was that my liner lock nut was a little loose so when I pulled a tight patch through the night before I unknowingly re-indexed the liner. Still, that should not have made it be off by that much. To test this "rotating liner" theory I used a Sharpie to put a mark on the tip of the liner and pulled a tight patch through. Sure enough, the liner rotated. I promptly tightened my lock nut and I am hoping this will not happen again because it really freaked me out and almost made me mentally self destruct first thing that morning at the match. Glad I was able to recover, but I'm all ears if anyone has had a similar thing happen with liner rotation and drastic POI shift....

Anyway, here are the match results:

4th is not preferable, but a 99.53% is a score I'll gladly take any day. Also, pretty well matching up with well known killer Chet Winkler is a pretty impressive feat. Great job to everyone in that 4-person "winners circle" as I'll call it. Super tough crowd, that's for sure!

NRL22 takes your top 6 scores and ranks you based on those 6. Erik has won I think a total of 5 matches and has a 99.357 for his 6th match in Airgun, so he is killing it at #1 right now. Note that at this match he shot a rimfire (open class) and has been trying to get a really good score with both airguns and rimfire - which is admirable. Once scores are updated I will have a 589.897/600 and he currently has a 599.357. Safe to say, I don't think anyone is touching either of our scores in Airgun this year, but there are still 2-3 matches left this season and James Brownfield may have a chance to catch up if he wins several matches. Only time will tell. I will shoot the Feb COF again at Aurora Sportsman's Club later this month and haven't decided if I'm going to try to win with my Panthera 700 or do something silly for YouTube and shoot it with an "unconventional" setup... ;)

Thanks to everyone who has been cheering us on and also for your time reading about our exploits. Hope this is an enjoyable thread!

Despite shooting in absolute blizzard conditions and wanting to go home before even starting, I was able to pull off a 2nd place finish, 2 impacts below my shootin' partner @zer0dev - who now has a perfect score of 600 for the season! Congrats to him! I will have about a 592 after results post. We will once again no doubt be the top 2 air rifles in the NRL22 this year - AKA the Tomax & Xamot of this sh1t!

My FX Airguns Dynamic 700 didn't seem to mind having its action completely full of snow and ice to the point where I thought it was going to jam - what a workhorse! I was God's silliest goose today and let my objective lens sit there and get caked in snow which then froze to the lens while the rifle sat there after sight in. Just the short safety briefing alone was enough time to get a thick layer of ice on my lens. 2 hand warmers and 4 or 5 microfiber towels later and here we are. Glad I persevered through this match and challenged myself and my equipment. It was well worth the struggle! 💪

Very good shooting both of you. I’ve been following your progress for the past two years and looking forward to seeing the both of you shoot at RMAC PRM this year. $20k for the winner!
