The "Born On" date is on the tank label. The tank can be filled by shops till 15 years after that date. Hydro is every 5 years as Anthony indicated. The tank is NOT bad after 15 years as it can still be filled by a person with their own compressor but it should be hydro tested on the same schedule IF the tester will even touch a tank over 15 years old. Recently there is a new testing method that allows tanks to be re-certified for an extended period over 15 years but you are a good way away from that date. DOT in the USA requires any pressure vessel over 2" in diameter to be tested on a schedule. This would include all small CF and aluminum Tanks used on airguns BUT I very seriously doubt that most people comply.

It always makes me wonder why people are willing to cheap out on their own protection. I worked with guys who would shop around for the cheapest bullet proof vests. Here I see guys say screw the hydro and keep on filling at home. Putting a price tag so cheap on your life or your kids heaven for bid is just crazy. Spend the few bucks to be safe folks.

Because, John an old tank outside scope of the certification under pressure can be dangerous. That's why your required to test your bottle every five years.fire fighters replace their old scba bottles and dive shops won't fill old tanks without a hydro or a aluminum tank manufactured before 1970. Tank failures have killed so yes it can be catastrophic

I looked and looked and looked some more but couldn't find a single story or report to confirm your claims about a scba tank causing death through catastrophic, or other types of failure. If you wouldn't mind linking the news article, police report or obituary that contains this information I will be greatly appretiative.

I have read thru the links you posted and I was aware of a few of those failures. I was wondering if anyone knows of the modern carbon fiber tanks failing, The links you posted are in reference to Aluminum scuba tanks that are known to be faulty do to the AL composition on some tanks manufactured in the late 80's early 90's, I happen to own one of these and no longer use it. The scba tanks mentioned were 3126psi cylinders that were made with some sort of plastic and fiberglass reinforcement and should be well out of date and retired by now. Thank you for your research and making me aware of this thread.

I have talked to some people that have made a carbon fiber tank explode , Safety training at the fire dept. Not sure what they used but at 9000 PSI the tank that was 20 years old popped , A rip in the fiber and a big wisssh and that was it. Said they had to hit the tank with a blut object to make it pop. I am not sure they had a carbon fiber tank, but the caption kept saying it was .
