If you don't shoot much, and you already own a decent shop air compressor, boosters make some sense. I have owned a ShoeboxF8, so I have experienced a few hitches, including running the two on different power circuits, adding dryers, etc. It did get the job done albeit slowly.
I now own an Omega Air Charger, and it is like a whole new world. If I had made the jump up front, I would have saved myself a lot of money.

I have a 4.5gal oiless jobsite compressor that goes unused these days. It even flows 6.5cfm@90psi, right were they recommend. I won't be able to get one until the fall so no rush for me. The bonus of waiting is that I get to see the kinks get worked out too.

With a booster you need to also purchase a moisture filter for $200-$400 which brings the cost much closer to a stand alone compressor unit.
