Air Venturi or Hatsan Compressor Question

Good point bandg, a little less stress on the rings might go a long way. The tool is hollowed out on the bottom to assist in holding it in place on top of the piston but again, probably not necessary. Next time and I'm sure there will be one, I'll just stretch it enough to get it on the piston, maybe scribe a mark on the cone. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for posting the excellent pictures. Hope the repair solves all issues.

I am not sure about AV and Hatsan but from the pictures, it seems that the design of the parts are the same as those of Yong Heng. They are probably just bigger. I have asked the Yong Heng people how they install the second stage piston seals and they sent me this picture :

The piston head can actually be removed. Stretching of the seals need be done for the top and bottom ones. The one at the middle can just be put in place with no effort. To do the stretching in the factory, they just use a screw driver . I have tried this method on my Yong Heng and it works. As the amount of stretching is minimal, a bit of squeezing by fingers will get the seals to shrink back to more or less the original size

Here is a close up video of how I did it. The piston is clamped onto my bench vise first. The ring in the video is a used one. It can be seen that the ring is slightly cut in the process. The edges of the piston should be deburred beforehand

Update on my AV, after finding the leak in the hose in two places I also found that the filter house apparently has a leak as well. I think it cracked through the threads from the inside out. There is no seam where the leak is coming from. I have contacted AV and got a note today saying they did have a filter housing and the hose that goes from the filter to the onboard pressure gauge. After I found that I was too scared to push my luck.

For the time being and until I get the parts I have bypassed this filter housing and temporarily going in the bottom of the Gold filter that I already had mounted on the AV. I installed a tee with a drain valve mounted in the bottom. I ran it this evening and it's really compressing well after the installation of the new seals and cleaning up all the other parts.

I swapped out this bulky tee with a slimmer slightly longer model upon assembly. It caught fluids very well btw.

I have the Air Venturi compressor. You guys started talking about them malfunctioning and I think you jinxed me. I have had mine for probably a year or so and when I pulled mine out to use it today, it would only put up 2000lbs. Tore down the high side and things in there looked fine. Took head off low side and found a muddy liquified goo around the reed valve that seals the crank case on the pressure stroke. Cleaned that up and I'm back in business. I noticed that the included parts assortment mostly has low end gaskets so I wonder if this is a common problem with these. Monday I am going to see about setting up a Nitrogen fill in case something happens to the AV and I must wait on parts.

I have been using compressor oil, but the oil gets black almost immediately and I have changed it after only short runs thinking I would eventually flush it out and it would then stay clean longer. Recently I viewed another airgunner on YouTube recommending the use of synthetic motor oil. I think the mud I had built up on the inlet reed valve may be a result of the high humidity we always have along the Gulf coast.

Could well be right. Maybe synthetic would help in the high heat use these small compressors experience.

If the heat is playing a part in the lube turning dark quickly, things should be okay. Heat in some auto engines cause a darkening of the oil, while still protecting the inner workings. What is concerning is when you read something about one of these compressors coming apart. I think that the Air Ventui compressor is probably a Youg Heng with an added on cooling system and a very inflated price tag.

Good golly good news. I found out Friday that AirVenturi specifically Jordan and Stacey are sending out a filter housing and new hose that goes between the filter housing and onboard gauge/auto shut down. Even though the unit is going on three years old in December they realize the the amount of trouble I've had with it and have graciously cut me some slack here. I had previously bypassed the filter housing when I found that leak and went directly through my "Gold" filter and the compressor is pumping air great now. It'll be good to get it back to factory equipment and start over fresh. My hats off to AirVenturi for helping out as much as they have.

The AV compressor saga continues. Pyramid sent me another hose and filter housing and I put it on. The compressor was working like a champ so I topped off a 75 and was working on a second then it quit compressing all together. I checked a couple of easy things first, the low pressure check to make sure high pressure was going back that way and then the high pressure check at the bottom of the filter housing. Both of those looked good so I pulled the cylinder off the high pressure side and I had a small piece of thin metal fall out when the piston cleared the cylinder head. Hmm, not good, so I pulled the head off that cylinder and found the small valve had broke.

Easy enough fix if I had the part on hand. Got on Pyramids site and ordered this small one and the large one as well. While I have it apart I'll try to reduce the depth of pitting on this valve seat.

Not getting much run time as of late so hopefully this repair will get me back in business... the saga continues.
