Results AirGun Field Target Match, Feb 20th- Concord Ca

This was a first- a match with auto resetting targets! I've a video attached of the event, a bit long but tried to give you a flavor on what the match looked like. There were no Cease fires, all of the auto targets worked flawlessly. We did have some traditional targets as well, and it's interesting to see how awkward the old fashioned plate fallers are.

The winds were up to their usual mischief- the hills are green, lush and communitive of the force if not the direction. Just because the grass in the background is going right doesn't mean the wind at the target is!

Great group: kids, adults, a dog, good people. Missed seeing Bill from Target Forge and Son L., but I have written excuses from them both. We had a new shooter, someone else shot using a borrowed gun (mine and he almost outshot me, darn it) and all types of manufacturer's wares represented on the line. If you know your air rifles, I did try to highlight the usual and unusual in the clips.

Love to have you come out play if you are in the area- we won't have the new targets going forward. Scott H. -master fabricator and inventor, drove his precious cargo 3 + hours to share with us. However, we will put on a nice event for you to try your luck if you come out in the future. What you will get is an opportunity to learn what your equipment can do as you make plans to make it shoot better for you in the future.

Hope the video shows you the collegial atmosphere and comradery we get to share at these events- it's fun to shoot, but best when you get to shoot with these people!

Fun day indeed and those "SPEAKING" Auto Reset target would be fantastic for a home range where strings are just not ideal. Bit too confusing and speedy to reset for serious competition uses ... But they have a place without a doubt !!

Lol .. dang my score was ......... Poor. Shooting a DEMO rifle to see if FT capable showed as set up it was not. POI /POA drift with temperature changes proved fatal.

It was a FUN match and so it was FUN !!!

Get out there and shoot some Field Target !!!

There has been some debate about the reset delay timing. I like it at about 3 seconds and that’s about what the targets are currently set at. It’s a software setting so it can be anything we decide on. Some people, like you, prefer a longer delay. More than 6 seconds would be the maximum before I feel like times a wasting.

I’m not sure what you mean by a “bit too confusing”. If you mean the sounds, they are a work in progress, and they can be disabled. These units were designed as retrofit devices for Gamo targets. We are currently working on a target design with a better integrated reset mechanism and sound system. Sound should be better directed and have a volume adjustment.

Just thinking out loud, perhaps a LED light? The sounds are neat- it sounded like a casino on the range as targets fell in non synchronous timing.

Scott H. had an interesting insight during the match- the sounds reverberating while one was shooting was a positive encouragement of successful shooting down the line, like the aforementioned Casino analogy. Winners beget winning?

When the field was silent for a wee bit, it was almost disconcerting. I had my head on a swivel during the match, trying to watch the line and still score for our team. Having the sounds helped like a steady wind in the sails of a boat.

When the range went silent, the Bat radar went off, and me wondering why the quiet.

The event went off smashingly, especially considering all of the unique ideas. I'm stealing the numbering system for each target that Scott presented. It was very helpful, even if there was a line running to target. Less confusion leads to quicker shooting and a smoother match, for sure.

Only state a bit slow to reset based upon your squad mate paying enough attention ... Not a negative critique, there really AWESOME !!!

I want to hear all critique. Negative/positive/neutral. I'm making these trips to get feedback as much as testing the reliability. The feedback can help drive the development. As a match director, I don't like strings. But I can imagine that some might prefer pulling strings. So far the devices are proving more reliable than strings, less work to setup, and have reduced the number of cold lines significantly. I still use clamps to secure the target, but it does not really even need to be clamped down. It's gotten to where I keep my scope on the target as the target resets, I check for my pellet strike on the paddle. It's nice not to break position because of pulling the string.

I use 4" high numbers because that is what is specified for official WFTF matches. I did some testing and 4" high lettering is what the average person can read at 55yds without needing to look through the scope. You can identify your targets before getting into position. Good for the scorer too as they know which target to watch. The WFTF numeric target designations require a little head math in order to determine which targets are assigned to your lane. For instance a WFTF target number 13 is assigned to lane 7. So I went with a more intuitive (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B...) alphanumeric system. Even 1" or 2" lettering would still be useful but the scope would be required to identify the far targets.

I liked everything about the auto reset targets except: No longer having strings to check the wind conditions. Overcast day so no mirage to read either. Not as worrisome for the 20 fpe shooters, but the 12 fpe shooters like me were lost at times. I was glad to see that Lonnie shot really well in WFTF. I was hoping he didn't because I would have had a better argument. Haha!
