AIRGUN of the YEAR 2022 (Full Review) TAIPAN Veteran TACTICAL Long

Rear cocking is just fine,...never get all this animosity against it.
Rear cocking is not fine, but all of us vet owners have come to accept it purely because all other features of the gun are flawless!
The trigger, the ergonomics, the accuracy, and the tank like build quality are all worth the lack of forward cocking. Took me 4yrs to finally understand that and buy my own!

Same
Franklink,

I really hope you are right about taking their sweet time on R&D for a forward cocking. Saw a post on their facebook page but looks to be after market add on and haven't seen anybody else with it. Vaporware? But I disagree with about "why fix what ain't broken" mentality, there is a loud majority who wants forward cocking for this gun and I'm afraid Taipan will left behind in ways of dodo birds. Think blackberry cellphone, which was all the rage in the early 90's. They thought they capture the cellphone market and failed to innovate. Guess what happened next? Apple came along with their iphone that made blackberry obsolete literally over night. Maybe its not as dramatic with Taipan but it sure looks likes obsolescence is knocking at the door already and nothing worse then a slow death of a company with great potential. I want to be a Taipan owner to experience its legendary trigger and accuracy but not until they come out with forward cocking as well.

I do not see the rifle going anywhere, its one of the few that you can pull out of the box and just shoot, in fact ive only seen it gain more popularity as forums/social media has become more active.

The only thing about it people can "complain" about is the rear cocking.

but thats just my opinion

A airgun with the magazine near your ear will NEVER be the gun of the year, hey it rhymes

Have you ever owned one?
Fx impact, fx maverick, daystate alpha wolf, daystate redwolf, all have mags near that area along with just about every bullpup out there because thats the nature of bullpups.

Had other rifles with the mag near my ear, no need to waste my money for the same problem, don't be so touchy to the facts jack
I'll stick with conventioal rifel designs like the Crown where the mag in in front of my ears, bullpups suck and way back behind you cocking don't help
I have every right to my intelligent opinion

So touchy? lol I asked a simple question and stated a simple answer haha. You have literally not explained to any reason why they suck though.

He’s specified in other posts that he has ear issues, and finds the bullpup design to be too loud for him. He voices his opinion on this whenever it comes up. There’s no point in starting a pissing match with him. He’s made his opinion perfectly clear many times. I personally don’t have an issue. He does, so we agree to disagree!

Ah ok, I was unaware of this. So its not really a design flaw just something that doesn't work specifically for him. He doesn't really voice it that way lol

Thanks for clarifying! I didn't realize he was the end all be all say for all of us airgunners as far as guns of the year go!

...just because someone puts it on the their page doesn't make it so though

Specifically labeled with an lw barrel but in the description says CZ

Oh and then you come to the search feature on this forum

Where answers are inconsistent
That is because some have CZ and some don't from my understanding most of the newer rifles if not all? (could be wrong here) have LW barrels

I think @mtnGhost could clarify this .... he is the Taipan Guru
Taipan told me last fall that all of their .22cal rifles are shipping with CZs. They were using LWs for a while, and I wouodn't doubt that some dealers are still selling the LW models from old stock, but I would bank on the tactical configurations shipping with CZs (from the factory at least lol).

Well this is good news to me then , hope my new .22 short has a cz, was expecting an lw tho lol

I love the Taipan rifles, as they are; and am fortunate enough to own several. I would certainly buy the tactical stock, if it were available as a stand-alone offering.

Interestingly, I have seen a great deal of opinion regarding the 22 LW or CZ barrels. However, no head to head test? I did search here for something like that. The only thing I found was Tony (Talon Tunes) stating he felt the CZ barrel had an edge. I am not sure what that means. One is better than a minute of a fly's wing at 50 yards? Perhaps, it is simply personal preference?

Not exactly a head to head but close......

I've had my hands on/shot from 5 different Veteran OEM barrels, all .22. Three I owned and two in a friend's gun (the OEM barrel in his is probably a CZ since it's a UK vintage gun, as marked on the receiver, and he bought one of TT's 700mm CZ barrels). So, call it two CZs, two LWs, and one unknown (but likely CZ).

Of the three I own and have the most experience shooting, two are supposedly LWs and one is a CZ. The pedigree from the CZ is pretty clear since it was from back from when R&L airguns was selling the Veterans. All three of those shoot JSB pellets weighing less than 18.14grains with equal and incredible accuracy (none of the three shoot the 25.4grain .22s worth a dang. All three also stink with slugs.)

Since the R&L days, the water's are much muddier when it comes to the barrel manufacturer, especially with one of the current retailers selling supposed CZs for a premium. There are simply no marks on the barrels to indicate CZ or LW. And as covered above, that "CZ" on the side of the receiver of the gun means nothing about the type of barrel in the gun. Just where they were manufactured.

The older ones have breech markings like this:

The current ones have breech markings like this:

From pushing pellets down the assortment of Taipan barrels mentioned above, they all have shared:
  • fairly tight bores
  • an incredibly tight choke
  • consistent rifling without any of the loosey goosey areas that some airgun barrels seem to have.
  • pretty rough looking crowns, compared to how a crown can be made to look with a little polishing
So, I'm not sure that it matters whether CZ or LW made the barrel, the Taipan specs seem to call for the pretty much the same thing. And Taipan's quality control seems to be doing their jobs to make sure the barrels meet the specs.

This is what I think, as well. LW barrels are also used in many other high end guns made in Europe.
There's just no way to know on a Veteran. Not only are there no identifying marks on the barrels, the CZs and the LWs are both 12 land and groove barrels that impart seemingly identical rifling marks. (maybe with a loupe a guy could see minor differences?)

But yes, LW goes into some of the best airguns that are made. So, having a supposed LW barreled Veteran doesn't mean it's subpar from a supposed CZ barreled Veteran.

(I've read that the prior generation "Mutant" did have some produced with "Listone" barrels. Seems like there were two divots that some guys were using as indicators of Listone vs CZ but that was all prior to the "Veteran" generation. And since the barrels for Mutants are held into the receiver with grubscrews and not threaded in like the Veterans, there's really no way to end up with a Listone in a Veteran).

Veterans either have a CZ, or a LW or somebody machined something else to fit them. I've had a borrowed Vet in my possession for a few weeks that somebody machined a RTI Slow Twist for. VERY VERY VERY intriguing. And we wouldn't know that it was an RTI Slow Twist if it didn't have "RTI, etc" laser etched into the barrel.
