Airgun reviews

How many of you pay any attention to influencer/reviewers who review airguns and related equipment?
It's entertainment.. with a grain of salt . Use you tube as a last ditch desperation to . ( Try my best not to support it )
It's far more promo or sales pitch then a review .

A few years back I watched a review on a rifle I was not even marginally interested in. I was intrigued until I saw the rifle listed on our very own classifieds section by the reviewer with a description that included a statement something like “only 9 pellets shot from this rifle”

How can you evaluate any piece of equipment with that little effort. That’s when I lost any semblance of faith in YouTube or online reviews as a source for real definitive information.

When I was first introduced to PCP’s I watched lots of YT videos and read forums such as AGN and similar. The YT videos were good for seeing the gun from many angles which helped me if I was going to further pursue it, then the forum research followed. I started with a Benjamin Marauder synthetic .25 as it had good reviews for a entry level 25-30 yard PCP (in my opinion). From their I jumped to FX, Daystate, AAA and Air Arms because they just plain have solid reputations and outstanding customer support (if needed). I was extremely pleased with every one of those purchases. They didn’t need a YT influencer to convince me they were a good product.

When I am considering purchasing a ‘new to me’ item, I usually do a search for reviews on that item. I would much rather go to a local shop to view the item, but that isn’t possible, so I read/watch the reviews. I do realize that many are given an item to do a promotion for under the title of review, but that happens. In some cases the reviews prove to me that it would be a good item to have while others are just entertainment.

If I am already interested in a PCP I will watch reviews from multiple sources. Then I will peruse AGN, GTA and HAM for actual member/user reviews. Subsequently reaching out to some via PMs for their personal takes on a PCP. Very generous members have provided information that saved me a lot of trouble… So a little bit of both, but with more weight given to the opinions of actual buyers/users of said PCPs…🙏

I'm just getting into the hobby, so I tend to watch a bunch.
I'm trying to determine my first PCP, so I'll read some reviews (mainly on here), then go watch a half dozen videos about a specific model from various Tubers. Some of those videos may be from an online store, others from what you may consider "influencer", and I try to find a couple from average guys who shoot and share data to toss into the mix. That hopefully gives me a good spread of info.

I don’t watch much. Never did because I want to own a gun long term. How much does a guy know about a gun if he hasn’t had it for a while? Some guns morph into a problem child. Some get better with time. Most of the stuff I’ve watched is about a gun I’ve owned for a while. I like to see if any of the shortcomings I’ve dealt with are mentioned. They are not. And that‘s when AGN gets a new member trying to fix an issue that his influencer didn’t mention. AGN and other forums are part of this machine.

Manufacturers ship free guns to YouTube used car salesmen to work their magic. Dealers then sell guns. Forums get new members that need help fixing them and showing them off. The wheels on the bus go round and around.

Manufacturers send free slugs to YouTube used car salesmen to show magic groups and long range kills. Dealers sell slugs. Forums get new members wondering what they are doing wrong. And the wheels on that bus go round and around.

I prefer to be part of the last part of the machine. I try not to feed the only deceitful part of the machine with views. But I’ve bought a ton of guns before the whole YouTube airgun guy was a thing. So I don’t need it. And I won’t feed it.

Watch for entertainment purposes only. All should be taken with a grain of salt. Remember a recent one reviewing some hatsan semi auto pistol. It starts off with the pistol running the gauntlet on some reactive steel targets at 20 yards. Then the review proceeds to test like 4 different pellets not one of which even comes close to printing good enough groups on paper to not miss any of the steel targets that were shot at the beginning. Hmmm. 🤔

I like to watch a few guys, one that comes to mind is Teds Holdover, he is informative, entertaining and his laugh when shooting pests makes me laugh. Up north airgunner is another I enjoy watching and Matt Dubber is very informative. Some reviewers are like watching paint dry. I wanted to add a guy that reviews springers I like to watch (Pellets And Pistons Airgun Channel)

I just thought it was funny, I read a review of an airgun a while back, can't even remember the gun, doesn't matter, but it was a very high end gun, for sure. The thing shot "ok" on the targets, and when they did a full shot string, the reviewer was trying to say a 45 fps ES was pretty tight? The SD was something like 14.7 fps.

Why not say, this thing needs tuned or I can't get it to shoot consistently at all. This was a regulated gun, and most UNregulated guns can keep

I do kinda get a good laugh out of the reviews that just sit there with the gun in front of them and talk. I watched one on compressors, where the guy just sat there and read the advertising literature and the manual, that's all. It was hilarious and he acted like he was doing an in depth review.
But he got a view from you.

Yup for some it is for supplemental income and the views. Doesn't matter if the info is wrong, guns over filled by 50 bar, a review of a new gun then come on here and ask everyone else for tunes or how to tune so they can go back and claim all the credit, drop a borrowed gun on concrete and ding it all up then have to pay for said dinged gun. Come on here to sell dinged gun claiming it is so great he will buy a new one. Bash companies that don't give them the time of day when asking for free stuff to review. Gripe about it in forum only to get flamed more than once, appologize and repeat said moral malfunction. Yeah some reviewers got it all figured out.
