Alberta Canada Places to shoot PCP's

All of the indoor gun ranges here in Calgary do not allow PCP's to be discharged in their facilities. I was told that the PCP platforms "Scare the customers" ...say what!? How silly is that? So, I may set up an outdoor PCP range for air rifles only. I'll keep you posted on when we get it set up.
It sounds to me like they are being systematically indoctrinated to believe what they are told. Buy a nice big building and start your own range, catering to all. If they are that full then there's money in it.

... Most gun nuts I talk to have never heard of a PCP before...
Several years at my gun club leisure talk in the clubhouse, when people asked me what gun I am shooting, I said air rifles only ..."what? airsoft?
When they finally saw me on the 100 meters range with my Impact MK2 some of them came to me asking for specs, and most admit based on the audible sound wave the airguns have changed in the past ten or so years ...
But in a 650 members gun club I was the only one shooting air, from a bench right beside the big bores.

I'd be curious what they said to you after you divulged the specs. Usually once you let them shoot it they too get hooked. I caught onto the PCP craze years ago. I grew up with springers and pumpers but it was not until my 40's when started researching more. Like the Girandoni Air Rifle, today's variation of PCP air rifles have the same basic platform but just a whole lot more accuracy ...and power! After reading up and watching videos on the AEA Zeus .72 Carbine ...I must admit I am both enamored and envious of not owning one. For me up here in Canada ...the chance of getting one would be the same odds as the Budweiser Babe UFO showing up on my front lawn an abducting me. Ain't gonna happen as AEA just won't export them and there are no babes in UFO's. Sadly -

When I was telling them the specs and what my airguns can do they look at me in a very funny way.
And then I show them my 100 meter cards ;) They turned around and left except only a few, they liked the Impact also my Leshiy2 tickled the most interest.
So the powderburner guys are pretty much walking tall in my private - members only owned gun club.
I had a helluva journey with convincing the Board members that my airgun can perform the 200 meter distances, board meetings, presentations, calculation results to show, in order to get a permit to shoot with my airguns... because I don't have a firearm to make a training for long shots first :)

Calgarians are a little weird and creepy. I know -- I'm an Edmontonian.

In Alberta I think I've only ever gone to one firing range, it was somewhere around the Enoch reservation. Oh no, I also went to one near CFB Griesbach. All my gun use was pesting on the family farm, so I don't have a lot of advice.

But gun laws sure have changed! When I was a child, I'd ride my bicycle from Edmonton to the family farm with a semi-automatic pistol in my backpack. Loaded, of course. I left the country for a decade, and when I returned, all the laws had changed. Almost everything I used to do with the exception of breathing was made illegal.

My grandfather used to ride to his school as a kid on horseback. He'd have two revolvers on his hips, and a rifle slung around his back. Because he wanted to hunt on the way to and from school. Lots of kids did it. Things have changed.

Here in BC the Victoria Fish and Game range is totally okay with airguns. It's an outdoor range.

My guess is in Alberta, the outdoor ranges would be the more likely to accept airguns.

In Edmonton in the early 80's ....every one out of five people was an Elvis Impersonator. The slicked back hair ...chops, western shirts and boots were the norm for all the guys back then. Edmonton was always 10 years behind the times so I can see why you thought we we weird lol. The only difference now is that Edmonton had a hockey team back then. ;)

It certainly is interesting to hear of all the way things used to be. Just like your Grandpa who used to ride his horse to school ....how simple and less regulated things were back then. Today, we have more laws .. and less rights. Things cost more ...you get far less and the quality is half of what it used to be.
As for the outdoor ranges, I was only able to find a couple but they are far from where I live. In spring I'll have an acreage to set up my own range. Once its set up I'll be inviting other PCP enthusiasts to come out and shoot. I'm looking forward to getting that set up as it's been my vision for a couple years now.

Here in this part of KY they like the idea of air UNTIL the cost is talked about then they just laugh and walk away . Even a springer @ $300 brings a loud guffaw .

Around my place (Aurora, ON) within an hour drive radius, I have about 6-8 pistol indoor ranges and maybe the same number of outdoor just any kind of rifle ranges.
The two closest I know of, TITSC initial sign up is about $1350 with $600 annual membership fees for consecutive years, but a longest BR distance is 50M only about 20 lines available. The second where I was visiting is the famous SGC, and here it gets pricey.... the annual membership is about $550 but you must own a share that goes in average for $24K. I could not afford to buy but I was leasing (from one other member) for about $800/y so the total from my pocket was exceeding $1300/y just to enter on gates. The setup and layout of ranges is impressive, but what I didn't expect the club (and members) has very conservative views that doesn't include any airguns friendly games. So earlier this year when I retired I decided to withdraw the expense from my much thinner budget. Sittin now and watching what else is available and trying to justify maybe re-joining again for the next season.

The awareness of airguns in my area of Ontario (between Ottawa and Toronto) is improving but most hunters and shooters still view them all as Daisy BB guns barely suitable for kids that are not old enough to shoot .22 rimfires.

For the most part, the guys who have tried pellet guns have only used magnum break-barrels and are less than impressed with the experience. Can't say that I blame them.

I have shown my PCPs to the guys sighting in their deer rifes at the sand pits (before they were closed to the public). Generally they were in total disbelief that a "BB-gun" could easily hit shotgun shells at 50 yards (unfortunately, they stopped betting against me very quickly ) and that there were airguns that could take down a moose.

Guess that airguns will eventually become generally accepted. I'm not holding my breath though.

Cheers!

It certainly is interesting how the PCP world gets frowned upon. The cost to buy a quality PCP gun is not cheap. But if you make your own ammo then its much cheaper than powder burners in the long run. Still, I know a fair number of hunters that think they are gimmicky. That was until they seen the Umarex Hammer. It's pretty impressive for even those that frown on air rifles. Sooner or later they'll come around. They always do -

Scared of what? When I'm at the shooting range I would rather have someone next to me shooting an air gun than banging away with a .300 Win Mag.

Right!? I was told by Shooters Edge in Calgary that the air tanks concern/scare their customers and thus they do not allow them. Like you I'd rather be beside a PCP or big bore rather than a 30-06 or .308! Whatever the case may be they are missing out on a lot of business. I know a number of guys that would gladly pay the range to shoot. Unfortunately, like most PCP owners they have to wait until spring and head out to the country or shoot in their basement.
Next spring I'll be setting up a range on my 120 acres. If you are in Alberta near Edmonton and want to opportunity to come shoot then PM me and I'll let you know when its up and running.

Wow that's expensive! Crazy! When I get my outdoor range set up it'll be $20 for a full day and for PCP's and Big Bore airguns ONLY. I am looking at doing several events from long distance competitions to other fun target shooting.

Btw

I would have went more into detail what the ammo cost is compared to their powder burners. For me it is virtually cost free. I just shoot and remelt what I can claim and do it all over again :) You can do that with a center fire but now you need the brass, primer, gun powder and equipment. I have cheap 25 dollar sizers, a melting pot and molds. My supply is recycling itself. And that my friend is as cheap as it gets :)
