All you ft pistolero’s

"didn’t power come into play?" Other than the final limit we reached of 12 foot-pounds Solo, not really.

All else being the same, of course shorter barrels = less power. So had I prevailed in keeping more PISTOL in Pistol Field Target, the power-limit/pistol-size/chamber-volume/charge-pressure/shot-count equation would be vastly different than we have now.

BTW, given my long history of handgun hunting with revolvers and Contenders, my approach was heavily influenced by them. We'd have had a class for barrels to 10" allowing pistol or rifle scopes to 9X-

And another class for barrels to 8" with LER scopes (only) to 7X-

But again, the PFT founder was just one vote of five. FWIW, I'm (now) good with that...

Mostly.

I started PFT a couple of years ago as a way to pass the time on Fridays at the GPs I attended. I read the rules and went to work on meeting those rules. I agree the resulting configuration doesn’t look like a pistol as most would consider. But I met the requirements as stated. Everyone has an opinion and I’m ok with that.

The cut down rifle framed "pistols" can work well, but the most popular single pistol in FT is the 1720T. The pistol framed "pistols" look much like any Crosman/Benjamin air pistol. 15" barrels are legal for pistols, so, except for the scope setups, it's a pistol. I also use a rifle scope and 15" barrel on my Thompson Contender "pistol" as well.

Maybe the "offhand" lane in Pistol FT should be shot with one hand only touching the pistol.

My FT pistol uses some rifle parts, but keeps the Benjamin pistol frame.

So in my pistol journey I’ve opted for a pistol with Hawke Airmax touch 3-12x which has basically no eye relief. Contact with the cup is allowed so it gets tucked in tight to the face becoming a semi-solid point of contact and also allows for mounting far back for balance. Off hand is great too with the balance just over the trigger and eyecup contact. I’m sure the high power scopes yield some advantages but the near zero eye relief and balance made a world of difference for my shooting. Simple swap to the .177 parts for aafta.

That is the coolest P Rod handguard ever, please share its origins.

It is a very different game up here in Canada, mostly due to our restrictive laws. All pistols shoot under 500 fps in all three classes. We have scope to 12X, non magnified optics including red dots and diopter sights and my favourite, open sights. We also give two points for a knockdown and one for a face hit, mostly to encourage new shooters.

I have shot a TAU 7, FWB 80, modified 2240 and a Walther LP200 using open sights. Our targets are set from 10 to 25 yards and so far all hit zones are 1.5" Some of the scope and unmagnified guys have cleared courses, but no open sight shooter has to this point. There has been talk of introducing one inch zones out to a certain distance, which I would like to see happen. Covid really set out PFT matches back, since we did most of them indoors in the winter.
