Altaros Airgun Challenge - 3 Hit from 5 Shots

Man such consistent wind, or lack there of, nevertheless you have that gun dialed in so well!

Or, just lucky..

Thanks but being dialed in is a very relative term. And I missed a lot especially while dialing in the three slugs I was using and the 2 calibers. On the 200 yard vid I was using the 40 gr queen .22 cal. I was using the 60 gr .25 at the 457 yards and the 200 yard 4 inch plate. I should have started at the further targets in the morning at it was most calm but I was still dialing the impact in as it was quite a bit off. Maybe I should have started with just a couple of zeroing shots at 100 then go straight to long distance and work my way back as it always seems easier to shoot close distances after finishing the further ones.

I will see later if I can post a couple missed shots to show the wind at 200 yards about the time I video the above 200 yard video. But yes that day was one of the mild days for wind and the shots videod was when the wind was more consistent. I'm still very bad with wind calls and still learning. Wind mostly was coming from behind and going to the right.

Thanks for nice videos. Especially I like Scope Cam Videos, which I think is still not so much and that is the equipment for recording these videos already widespread.
The estimate of the wind is the hardest, but which is good, because one can learn it all your life and the only good way is practical shooting.

Here you go Steve, wind actually switched up a a little bit. Some more of the 200 yard shots and misses.

That's more the norm for me. That'd be hard because there's nothing just behind the steel to see a miss and to make a correction for.

I shoot long range mostly at my friends property which is way up on a hill and the targets are hundreds of feet even higher. Long story short the area is a whirly wind vortex with hardly ever consistent wind. Part of that is we meet at 1:00 in the afternoon. Most of our steel are wide animal shapes though so I can still keep hits on them unless the wind is too hard to figure out.

Then my property is ridiculous because it's a wind tunnel area which is frustrating to shoot on. When I go into town the wind is often half as much. There's been so many times I'll go get set up my gear in 1 mph wind, and by my first shot it's 3-4 mph, then a half hour later it's 7-11 mph.

Very occasionally I'll catch a day with nice wind conditions. The best time of year is January through February first thing in the morning but it's freezing out being at 6700 ft elevation and it's hard to talk myself into shooting.

Come March it's our windy season which gets stupid for me to even be outside in.

Sorry, LOL, I'm just venting. However I can't complain too much because I could be at different places to shoot long range in 15 to 25 minute drive.

This is the hill at my friends place. There's a white bobcat steel a little over halfway up at 300Y and below it is a rabbit which at the time of this photo was 250Y, and the top of the hill is around 440Y which is a 17 degree angle.

I totally feel for you, Steve, especially since the property is either yours or a friend's. With many mountains I noticed that as soon as the ground starts warming up the heat rises up the mountain side causing anything from a light breeze to heavy winds. That's why I try to get to the range as early as possible. Unfortunately it is still a hour and a half away plus $40 entry! Last year during the rains the winds were relatively calm. But it seems that there are some places don't ever seem to have any calm moments. 😕

I cannot handle the swirling stuff. When it does get windy I try to shoot the closer targets as there is less directional changes from the the wind. That way I can at least attempt to learn a little about the wind and its effects

The tactacam is a love/hate thing with me. My eyes tend the dry out at the range and so the focus on the thing tends to be off. I think I will attempt some scope stickers so at least each hundred yards is in focus. As for the starting and stopping of the videos I think I will just use a large SD card as I put a 256 in it to see if it works and it seems to be working fine. I just need to change the battery in it every 3 or so hours and carry enough charge ones with me. It will make finding things a little harder but at least I will have it recorded whether I like it or not. The trigger cam seems to be able to focus better but without a removable battery I think my only option is to keep it tethered to a external battery pack? I dunno if I can leave the triggercam on all day.

I guess with more seat time comes experience. Maybe in a couple years I can retire, buy airguns, and shoot all day. 😍

Very nice shots, Allen, cool! 😎
Keep up the good shooting! 👍🏼

Thanks(!!) to an AGN member who visited me in Peru for an "airgun vacation" I now have a .25cal P-3 available to me — with a slug barrel.

After screwing in an additional plenum, the Altaros Smooth Slugs (49.50gr) are hurling toward the target at 880fps — that's a 85FPE!! 🤩
A number that still brings astonishment and wonder to my airgunner's mind — as for many years my guns produced at most 30FPE — a third of that....

So, a powerful slug gun, a 4-32x56 scope, a cow corral with an aile of over 300y — I'm really geared up for long range 😃.
Well, almost..... 🤦🏻‍♂️
Got to get the ammo.....

➊ So I ordered a bunch more Altaros slugs from a well known airgun store.

➋ And my son, being the willing airgun mule that he is, was going to carry them in his luggage from the US to me in Peru. 😃

➌ But — the worst three-letter word in English — BUT the airgun store took 3 (in words: three) weeks to ship them. 😲
Naturally, they didn't arrive on time for my son to bring them to Peru.

➍ ➠ And now, Christmas will have to happen without Altaros slugs under the tree..... 😞

And my XLR shooting is taking a serious dent — my supply of Altaros slugs is very limited. 😞

Matthias, I know how you feel. I may not have the hurdles that you have to go thru. But my addiction is still pretty strong, I am also running low. I may have to roll over to some of the .22 31 or 32 gr ATP slugs I have laying around to tie me over until I order and get a new supply of .25 50gr. 😅

Congrats on the new P-3

Congrats on the new P-3

Thank you, Allen. 🤝🏼

I am so very fortunate, or rather — blessed — to have guns and scopes that only a couple of years ago I would have considered outside the realm of possibilities for me.....

I now can sell some of the lesser guns and scopes to Peruvian airgunners who have at most 10% of the choices that US airgunners have.

I am very thankful! ⭐
