Altaros Altaros M24 — Too ugly for the market...? 🤔

As soon as the Altaron M24 was posted in the classified, I clicked on it and wondered a loooong time, if I should buy it.

The performance for extreme long range must be amazing. 👍🏼
The Altaros slugs have been made with this gun in mind, they come from the same brand. 👍🏼

But, in the end, I did not buy it. 🤷🏻‍♂️
However, I wanted to see how quickly it sells, considering that it is hard to even get it in the US.
➠ Surprise: It's still available on the classifieds....

And I wondered if my own reason for not buying it have something to do with why it hasn't sold yet..... 🤔

✅ I like "black guns".
✅ I like "modern looking guns" 😎 — not "traditional looking guns"
✅ I like bullpups (less bulk, less weight, while same performance as traditional shape)
✅ For a significant shotcount I want to attach a bottle (in the size that suits me)

And the Altaros checks NONE of those boxes 🔲.

𑇰 ••• I remember the designer and builder talking about being an engineer that engineers things that work good* (as opposed to things that also look good).

➠ Too bad. 😞

Mora, here I come....

Matthias

PS: I hope it sells soon. It must be a gun that shoots amazingly. 👍🏼

Not that it matters much but I think that gun is a beauty and I would love to get my hands on one

Traditional? Yes - Ugly? Wouldn't that be an objective observation?

Yeah, Steve, I'm not being objective here — of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My suggestion was, that a majority today's "beholders" in the US have a different idea of beauty than what the Altaros M24 represents.
I say "the majority" — knowing fully well there is a segment that likes traditional gun types, classical shapes, wood stocks, blued steel — the works (the works from a century past, that is).

We live in the Golden Age of Airgunning — with so many choices for every taste. 😃

No problems here with how the M24 looks but I do prefer that chassis system that German guy has, the one that does the videos.

I would have bought a M24 to use in a UFT match I go to except for the shot count. I'd need to air it up after every lane though which is a hassle. However I'd like to try one on loan just too see how it stacks up against my V3.

I've had such good luck with my Vulcan 3 using Altaros 60gr I'm pretty satisfied right now. But if I got a 700cc bottle which would get me halfway through the match, and a modded mag I could use the 60gr in as a repeater, I'd be super happy.

The DRS or Panthera also got my attention for the PRS form factor which I like but I am not going to buy a gun with a liner system.

I think as time goes by some company is going to make the near perfect PCP air rifle for what I want so I'll keep plugging away until then.

I like the looks of the rifle. I doubt the majority think it’s ugly but that’s subjective. I think the price is what’s keeping it from selling. The DRS is very similar in form to the M24 and can be had NEW for almost half the cost of the used M24. For $1600 you could have a new DRS with an aftermarket chassis. The m24 took a while to come out. When it finally did, it was in the shadow of the DRS.

@JungleShooter Are these Altaros rifles just not selling well?

I do not know, Dave.
I was just posting about an n=1 observation — and about my personal decision making process in relation to an M24.

And my wondering out loud, if others had similar concerns as I came up with — which would explain why the gun still hasn't sold.

➠ But @Pale_Rider, you probably have offered a better explanation than mine: the current offering price. 👍🏼

Giving my experience with an Altarous regulator issue, l would never purchase anything sold by Altarous again. Don
I bought a Huma regulator for the SPA M16 and thought it would be better than their original one. I soon had problems with the Huma regulator so I returned the Chinese regulator and everything was fine. Yes, they sent me a free rebuild kit from Huma. This means that I will never buy anything from Huma again (now they have become big sellers of everything and anything), in fact they only produce regulators, unlike Altaros, which has its own PCP weapons, regulators, booster pump, ammunition and some other products. Funny

Free country, spend your money where you want and l will do the same. You were lucky to get a rebuild kit. I got lip service. Have a good life. Don

Personally, I’m a big fan of the M24 and M40 sniper rifle system, especially the older variants that paved the way for modern sniping, so looks isn’t it for me at all. While I seem to have largely gravitated towards bullpups for my PCP purchases, that was quite accidental as I have always appreciated a classically styled bolt action rifle.

The biggest factors that have kept me personally from being interested are the price and the intended use. As others have noted, I don’t have a need for an air rifle capable of shooting at the distances the M24 is advertised to shoot at. I live in an area of the US where I’ll just grab a .22LR, .17HMR, or .223 and have significantly improved ballistics and terminal energy. My attraction to air rifles is primarily in the 0-150y range while keeping noise down and bleeding off energy quickly to eliminate (or at least drastically reduce) ricochets and pass-throughs on my quarry.

The price aspect has already been covered. While the M24 looks the part with an actual turn bolt action, I can get almost the same look with the FX DRS, and have as much performance as I need for several hundred less, all while probably having better parts support. They’ve got an uphill battle facing the DRS for sure.

Great looking rifle with an amazing heritage. It just doesn’t check enough boxes for me to be worth the price.
