American Air Arms .30 cal EVOL - WOW!

If I had to choose between the HP .22 and .30 I'd probably go with the .22. But that's just cause I like shooting .22s. I don't think you could go wrong with either!

No, you can’t go wrong with either. The .22 has intense “ZAP” on small game, and the .30 has more “Whack” if you need (or just want) it. The HP .22 shoots insanely flat with NSA slugs. When I was shooting the prototype, Tom was giving me holdover points. At first I was like “you’re poopting me, right?” but the data was spot on. I chose .30 for my EVOL because I believe (pellet Vs pellet) .30 is the deal for 100 yard competition. I also don’t mind over-killing squirrels and am hoping to turkey hunt with it as well.

Sorry I’ve been MIA for a while, guys. Focused on high school bass tournaments!

Been doing a little more shooting in the past few days with the .30 EVOL. It’s the only gun I reach for and I need a lot of practice if I’m doing EBR this year.

Anyway, yesterday I was experimenting with grip, bipod position and height, plus a couple of different butt bags. Unsorted JSB 44gn at 880 fps. Wouldn’t change anything on the rifle except the trigger, which is way too heavy for my liking as delivered, but I’ll get around to that eventually. Loving this gun and can’t wait to HUNT with it (the main reason I got it)!!

Come on Brian your making me drool again! Good luck @ EBR!, she’s a shooter for sure, good talking to you last weekend

Yep, she’s a shooter. I won a 100 yard benchrest match today up in Harrison. It was really windy, so the goal was to get some practice in a competitive environment and boom. There was only 8 or 9 shooters, but I’ll take it.

That's great. Just my .02, but I think you are shooting the 44s at a great speed. These guys shooting them at 950 aren't doing themselves any favors.

Yep - BC goes to crap as the pellet spends its entire flight trying to stabilize. Shhh, don’t tell anyone. Claudio’s EVOL shot a 238 / 8x and stacked 10 pellets in the same tiny hole at 100 yards (witnessed) as delivered from Tom. Now he’s tuning for 920+ and wondering what’s “wrong” 😐

BC for 100 yard distances maxes out right at 900 FPS, give or take a few FPS. So 875 to 925 is the total "sweet spot". I saw Claudio's 238 post a while back, before RMAC I think. He shot the same gun at PAC last week and shot 201 in the finals, didn't make the top half I think. I wonder what speed he had tuned for? I remember at RMAC he was shooting the new Daystate Safari in .25 caliber with the Mk2 Heavies, and was shooting 1070 FPS - didn't make the finals... I'm pretty sure that's correct, since he was talking to Derrick and I, and he said "mil-setenta". He was also talking about some "proof" barrel that was a thin stainless steel but carbon fiber wrapped for stiffness and lightness. Are those standard or was that a special order?

I think we'd have to ask him? Brian in Michigan shoots 44.75 grain from the same gun. And going up to 50.1 grain only reduces about 35 FPS. Plus, POI will remain almost the same with those two pellets. Maybe he just had a hard time guessing the wind? How do you explain the RMAC Pro winner (Alvaro Lopez) finishing last? And then some consistent shooters always seem to come out near the top, like Justin Welch and Matt Dubber, no matter what the conditions.

I think Claudio gets into his own head and becomes a little irrational when he’s having an off day. He thought his EVOL was shooting too slow, until we switched chrony’s and the gun was right where HE set it (not where Tom set it..) I was dumbfounded when he started asking around for 50gn ammo, but handed him a tin figuring he knew something I didn’t, which isn’t really a stretch, lol. FWIW, I shot a couple groups with 50gn out of my EVOL the next day, just to check myself and they were awful. I’ve been in competition my whole life and you don’t make big changes right before a final event. He literally switched to 50gn in the match, despite practicing & qualifying with 44’s. No time to validate prior to the final. Not ideal, IMO.
