American Air Arms .30 Evol

Solid solid solid! Mounted a Blackhound on top with good magnification and I am really enjoying the accuracy and performance of the entire platform. Coyotes better find a new hood to roam. The muzzel report is a bit loud for my backyard but a Donnyfl should tame the crack.

You will love it. Well, it is love spelt backwards. Can't tell you about coyotes yet but I can tell you that yesterday late in the day the same rifle as yours took out a large woodchuck at around 90 yards. And just like small game with smaller caliber, it just plain ole fell over when hit. Heart shot. Hitting it, not a problem. Heart shot, luck of the draw.

@cavedweller thanks for the email response. I thought I would put the info I got from you here for general consumption. DonnyFL makes an adapter for the Evol. In fact, I didn’t know because I hadn’t looked before, but Donny makes a plethora (I like that word) of adapters. In the email recommend either the Emperor or The Ronin with a six inch extension from Donny.

Now my thoughts.
1. My understanding is that the Evol barrel shroud was meant to be an “expansion chamber” to quiet the gun and at the business end of the shroud there is disk between the barrel and shroud that does have holes to allow air to flow through into the shroud. Even so the extension on the Ronin is still needed? I wonder if the barrel shroud volume could be made more effective. Years ago I read about AirForce Condor owners drilling small holes at the rear of their shrouds to let that air escape out the back. I would rather let you drill holes in your very nice gun to experiment first, before I drill holes in mine😁. I am guessing that the extension is more effective because the air doesn’t have to change direction and flow backwards to expand? Now my first thought and second thought (below) start to intermingle. Could someone 3D print something that went in the small space of the adapter, a baffle the angled backwards, that helped redirect air back into the shroud?

2. There seem to be two different approaches to moderators. One being a chamber filled with some sound dampening material like felt. The other being a chamber with baffles of some sort that strip the air and redirect it. I read about the possible accuracy affects of air turbulence around the pellet as it leaves the barrel. Is this a thing? Is one of the methods above more or less effective at reducing that turbulence and therefore improving accuracy? What if the two methods were combined, some cool shaped baffles to strip the air (maybe reducing the turbulence?) then some sound absorbing material. The Evol already has cool shaped baffles in the factory moderator. I am wishing there was a way to keep that factory baffles moderator and then add more suppressor to it.

Edit: though in this post I was specifically referring to the Evol the last part has questions about moderators in general that I am going to post in that part of the forum also.

I guess they stopped shipping them with the standard PRS Gen3 stock.
I believe that you are correct.

I wound up adding weight to mine to make it less jumpy on the bench. It is a dedicated bench rifle for me, so the added weight is not an issue and really calmed down the rifle for easier follow through.
I added a length of 1" steel bar inside the stock systems buffer tube, and I hung a 1" bar approx 14" to 16" long from the bottom Pic rail.

Just a heads up on the moderator, I know people feel inclined to spend more money....in this case an aftermarket moderator would be a big step down. The factory one works with the shroud as a system and is precisely made to withstand stress of vigorous field use. Don't waste money on aftermarket crap just because a few of the cool kids have them.

I bought the Donny adapter, and still have it, but found it to be unnecessary unless one is in an urban backyard or needs to be super duper stealthy.
Even when shooting near sound reflective surfaces, the Evol is pretty darn quiet for where it is set up at.
I do highly recommend that you fire it once with the factory mod removed just so you can appreciate how well it actually works for its size.

Good to know - my plan is to sound test both configurations first, and then check POI for any changes - if I hear or experience any degradation I’ll swap it back .

@cavedweller I respect Dana’s knowledge and experience, but mine has been different here. Maybe it’s a personal thing, but I prefer hunting with mine using a DonnyFL Sumo. With the factory moderator my shots pop. The shots are noticeably quieter using the Sumo. I haven’t noticed any issues with accuracy or clipping shooting pellets or slugs with the Sumo affixed. I haven’t shot beyond 120 yards with it using the Donny, but I prefer using it especially when hunting where I may have an opportunity to take multiple shots. I don’t know jack about the shroud system’s design and I bought my Evol used. I’m sharing my honest experience as someone who has taken his Evol .30 out in the field on coyote stands. I’d say try shooting yours both ways and see which you prefer. However, you will need an adapter to use the Sumo with your Evol unless the design has changed. I don’t know where to buy the adapters, I bought mine with my gun.
