An accident. Take care please. Playing with HPA is not a joke

It is incorrect that al stainless is weaker. Yes, 303 304 316 etc. typically used are indeed inferior for such uses. . There is a type of stainless, Or family of such steels known to we metallurgist that is although called stainless, it is actually a family of Hi Carbon high alloy steels. They are exotics mostly made by the powder metal process. Highly heat treatable and extremely strong. The catch is, the heat treat is tedious and expensive. Involving atmospheric controlled ovens and sub. zero treatments during the tempering process which usually includes the 2 hr + 2hr + 2 hr. temper. I developed the triple temper in the late 80's for such steel when my shop was just a few miles from the Redstone Marshal Space Flight Center in Huntsville Ala. where the space shuttles were built.

Biggest catch? It is expensive. Really-Really Expensive! The leader in this Country developing such steels was Colt Crucible Steels. Now Crucible Steels. several of the types they developed were my go to steel for my Knifes. Just the piece of steel cost many times more than a rather expensive knife steel. It cost that much . And that is before I ever started work. Making mistakes very costly.

Nation,

Upon further investigation of this incident and it's details, it seems that the manufacturer of this product does not use steel. He claims that he makes 2 models of said plenum, one in Titanium, and another in what he calls Aluminum 3x. Don't know, and I'm not sure what the "3x" denotation is, or means.

I'm often crusading about high pressure air. My other point is my daddy always told me always buy a reputable product from a reputable dealer and expect to pay more. When power plenums came on scene people I never heard of were building or importing them from china. There is no mandatory safety limits on the plenums unless they are made in the usa. I'M pretty sure FX has it's own limits and they probably exceed Sweden's and ours and England's. Our agency the DOT only regulates items( tanks etc ) that move pressurized substances inside the US. You buy a plenum from outside the US that comes over our borders unpressurized it is simply a an empty container. And you are on your own, it's cheap. How cheap is your sight, hearing, hands, and other manly parts. I seem to remember in my high school days( 50+ yrs ago) Federal safety factor was 10x, state 5x, local municipalities 3x, . That was bridges, elevator cables, pressure vessels and lots more. WHAT IS YOUR SAFETY FACTOR ??. NOTHING GIVES ME SHIVERS & TEARS MORE THAN A MAIMED HUMAN BEING. I Hope I Never see another especially anyone from this forum. May what ever power you believe in watch over us all. I managed to keep my tool partners and apprentices safe and in one operating piece. Sadly I'm not able to do that for all of you. GBGUNNER

Thanks Tom, maybe he can weigh in on the material and thread design. A the top of page 2 it shows about two or three threads, which is totally unsatisfactory.

Only the first 3 threads carry the highest load percentage.

Yep, I was taught early on that the first three bear the majority of the load (and you need at least three full rotations to bear a minimal load).
