Another GX CS2 teardown

I was kinda bored today, so I decided to tear down one of my CS2 compressors to see if anything needed to be attended to. The bore and the piston looked fantastic. This particular compressor is going on 3 years old and is used a lot, so it's a good ambassador for the brand.
The only thing I can see is the grease in the gearbox is pretty poor in my estimation. However, you have to admit, three years and no failures, speaks to it's protection. The grease is very sticky and seems to stay wherever it gets slung to. Some teeth on the large gear had very little grease on them, and obviously some were packed, so hopefully it transfers around the gear.
I will be looking into a better grease for this application. This looks like a perfect application for cornhead grease. Cornhead grease will thin a bit in operation and coat all surfaces, then when at rest, it thickens back up and stays put. It is a grease designed just for this kind of application. Cleaning out the old grease will be a pain, but it does wipe up, it's not glue, so it'll just take some work.

This tear down took just over an hour from unhooking it from the power to pumping up my Impact, so it stupid simple to get it apart and back together. I am a believer that a bit of maintenance now and then and these little gems will last a long time. The machining is pretty darn good and everything seems to be holding up admirably. When you look at the crankcase, it was not cleaned at all, that's how clean this thing runs.

Disclaimer: I only run N2 through my compressors.
