Another Impact upgrade I MUST have.......doh!

Mine arrived also. First thing I noticed was it’s not light so mine is definitely getting chopped in half. Second is the length of the fasteners. Mine won’t go on my gun until I grab some stainless fasteners. I will get to chopping in the meantime. Even though my gun is only a 600mm, I can’t afford any more fat. My scope, grip, real barrel, Arca rail, and bag rider all really packed on the weight so I’m already on the edge of not wanting to stalk around with the gun. I did check my rail and it’s not warped so that’s a good thing.

Thanks for posting a picture of your gun qball. I’m a one piece mount guy and was going to chop my rail and didn’t consider the next owner of my gun might be a dual ringer. I will leave a little extra on for him.

I’ve always had to move the scope as far forward as possible and even resorted to offset mounts. The longer rail is super nice because it give me lots of mount options even though I’d not need the adjustable rings anymore.

Thanks for telling me that. So your scope is actually mounted more forward than normal? Maybe I’ll just hack mine off where I originally intended.

Yes I mount mine as forward as possible with the old rails and used offset mounts after, most of my scopes have long eye relief. Even with adjustable ST butt pad the shoulder hardly contacts the butt stock if the scope isn’t that forward for me. And laying prone is even worse but don’t do that much.

Ounces here and there turn into pounds. Next thing you know, just like our bodies, our guns are fat. The rail is not heavy if I was going to hit a baseball with it or use it as a cane. But if one of the two scopes you were contemplating buying was one rail heavier than the other…..

Very true but this is my bench gun so weight isn’t a bad thing. My dreamtac compact was just under 7lbs scoped but I switched scope again and now it’s couple of oz above 7lbs.

Anybody interested in 5.6oz of dead weight before I throw it away?

I didn’t mind the extra weight, like another member said it acts as a grab point and protects the barrel and shroud from possibly getting tweaked by a fall etc. hopefully I will be getting my replacement soon?
I liked the Idea of getting the scope further forward, I also bought some risers because the scope set a little low because of the higher cheek rest with the thicker rail.

got to shoot it today and my suspicion/hunch to buy the upgrade is correct. My impact feels noticeably more consistent and less hold sensitive by a good margin, the gun just feels more settled.

No groups picture because I was practicing for tomorrow’s long range silhouette match. As long as I get the wind close I can hit the 4 inch gong at 200 yards with ease. 2 inch targets at 100 yards is give me and 1 inch steal targets are also easy even in the wind. Not super precise target works but it just feels like my crown in ST chassis but a heck lot more power. Over all very happy with the upgrade so far!!! The backbone gets 2 thumbs up from me!!!

qball, did anything change with your slug tune after you aired the gun back up and started shooting. Are your settings different now to get back to the accuracy you had before the rail? In theory, by making the gun more rigid, the harmonics should have changed. Mine won’t be going on my gun until better screws arrive. Just want to prepare myself for how much tuning I’m going to need to do to get what I have now which is extremely good. The Impact I’m putting the rail on currently has eyebrow raising accuracy so I’m almost hoping I get a leak or something that forces me to tear the gun down.

@Vetmx: you asked an exceptionally good question and I made strategic blunder of making multiple changes all at the same time!!! Things I changed because I got the parts all this week:
- backbone
- FX brass regulator piston
- raised reg pressure tiny bit to 155bars due to the brass piston
- changed barrel/caliber from 700mm .25 to 700mm .22, had the barrel but didn't want to shoot it till regulator upgrade and backbone
- changed ammo/slug to 35 grain .22 NSA
- removed my earnest row carbon tensioner because I think the adapter has a slight alignment issue and had a bit of clipping so need to order a donnyfl adapter
- installed factory shroud instead

So I went to my friends house/property this after noon to sight in my gun for tomorrow with a huge mess of changes. I left the HS preload alone and first shot on my old HS setting was 890 fps, couple of click more and I was at 930fps. I fired 2 shots at 30 yard paper and the 2 slugs over lapping by half of the width of the .22 slug, a few more shots later I was zeroed and my group at 30 yard zero was about .3-.4 inch. Plugging my ballistic information and hit 100 yard paper exactly where I aimed, the wind was 5-10mph gusting so I figured trying to shoot groups in this wind won't really do much good but still got a couple of 1.5 inch groups on paper at 100 yards just to see the consistency and the wind. Dialed to 150 yards and the 4 inch gone is not really challenging, went to 200 yards and the 4 inch gong was a bit more work but can hit it with regularity if I read the wind right. Basically I did NOT do any fine tuning even after massive changes including ammo and got at least acceptable accuracy in less than 20 minutes! Thanks to the really strong afternoon wind and the need to practice for tomorrow I only tried to hit steel targets, I think the gun is good enough for the silhouette match and probably already MOA if not slightly better.

Personally I think if you don't change anything besides the backbone you will most likely find your gun to be more settled and more consistent. I intentionally didn't do perfect hold all the time and the POI really didn't change at 200 yards from what I can tell. I can see the horizontal drifts across 200 meter steel target so I'm very happy with the consistency and the lack of perceived hold sensitivity. Will have to find less windy days to do more fine tuning and testing but the initial test I really think the backbone did it's job of settling the impact and reduce hold sensitivity, it now feels like my crown on steroids which is my goal all along.

When I installed mine I did NO other changes/modifications. All I had to do was move the scope down some and I had to go 2 clicks right and I was back on with my 35 yard zero.

Like qball said I think it’s more rigid, I feel like there’s less movement when I pull it into my shoulder. My impact is used for hunting, and for me having that extra beef on the back rail is a huge plus. Also the detent is amazing. I can keep the bolt open with out accidentally loading a pellet while I’m sitting. Much less noise and time closing the bolt then opening and closing it.
It’s not going to be for everyone but it’s working out very well for me. I too wish it was a little shorter and lighter. But it’s not a noticeable difference to me.

Oh I do wish the color was a closer match. It’s not that good a match to be honest. As you will see in the picture.

How much does that beast weigh? Looks beefy in a good way...
