Anyone else have white squirrels in their area?

Here's a pic. There are about twenty in this area of the woods in western NC.

This one has a grey cap, but many are solid white. I'm guessing they'll taste the same as the grey ones do.

@Slapshot I haven’t heard of white squirrels so my guess is that it’s probably an albino. I understand albinism to be a genetically recessive trait. If you see multiple white squirrels in the same area it seems more likely that they would produce more albino kits within said gene pool.

I recall seeing one in school that had a lot of white on it. The campus was overrun with the things. This one had white ears, feet, and a white stripe or two down it’s back and a white tail.

Yep. Amelanistic (without melanin) squirrels. I see them in the woods here occasionally during hunting season but I give them a pass as I’d like to see them become more plentiful. Our strain is not native to this area. They were introduced here about 140 years ago along with peacocks and Guinea fowl by some wealthy property owners.

I've been hunting squirrels for over 30 years and have never seen a squirrel like that. When I was stationed in Korea I saw black squirrels.

Look up Olney IL. They have built a kind of town identity around white squirrels. They are, of course, protected.

I have black squirrels by me. Fairly plentiful. I generally give them a pass unless they are being destructive

There is one at my wife's college where she works. Threatened to shoot it and have a buddy stuff it for me. She said no. It will die of old age or a predator.

Yup ! Bowling Green KY has a lot of white Squirrels Protected but i would not kill one anyway .

I would love to trap a bunch of red 's and let them loose at my location , big red Squirrels in north IL / none here

fairly sure they are , but very protected, citizen watch groups , campus police

There is a town in SW Missouri, Marionville that used to claim to be the white squirrel capitol of the world. It's been many years since I have traveled through the area but the last time I was there they had a lot of white squirrels. Heaven help you if you harmed one!

They are all over Brevard, NC. Center of town has a small park and there groups of them all over the place.
