You are in a great area potentially to go shooting. I hunt Monterey Co, a lot (over 25 years) but live in the Bay Area further north where do you plan on going shooting? You don't have to say specifically if you do don't want but do you have places lined up already? It's not easy to find places unless you know people to get onto private land. Congrats on the new FX I'm not a fan of the .30 especially in CA since so much area is lead free and there is no lead free in .30 and probably never will be but I hope you enjoy it!

Airguns are exempt from "lead free" in CA, you've been misinformed.

No not misinformed the "lead free" exemption for air guns is only true on public land not private or government land there they the can make any rules they want and much of it is lead free in CA. 250K acres at Tejon Ranch (the largest private ranch in the state) no lead, over 100K acres at Ft Hunter Ligget (the largest army base in the country) no lead allowed are the two biggest examples but there are others. The lead free exemption is based on Fish and Game regulations which states only firearms must be lead free hence air rifles are exempt BUT on non DFG land those owners can make any rules they want including no lead even with air rifles.

Interesting, out of the hundred+ private permissions I have including large known hunting ranches I've never encountered this requirement. Those two examples have nothing worthy of hunting legally with an air rifle anyways. For small game and varmint hunting CA is one of the best states next to AZ.

@napairgunner, I’m sure you are right about specific properties specifically states no lead ammo. I have not been to those properties but on public or state and federal areas I’ve been to I don’t see the lead free ban on top of DFG exemption. Usually they have restrictions on when and how to hunt due to close proximity to people or type of wildlife in the area such as wild life management areas but most public land away from people simply follows DFG regulations. Given where you live it is very likely all the areas near you do have additional lead ammo ban but do the opposite of the song says…….go EAST young man! LOL

I’ve even talked to game wardens the lead ammo ban is specific to firearms and specifically for hunting. If you go target shooting then the lead ammo ban doesn’t apply even to firearms.

Really? Those two places which together are over 300K acres and are FULL of thousands of ground squirrels, and hundreds of rabbits, and also coyotes and other small game that are ideal for air rifle hunting. It's true in CA air rifles are not regulated like firearms are so in essense they are ignored when it comes to the lead ban more so then actually exempted. It's also true that 99% of private land owners don't ban lead use on their properties (I hunt at a private almond orchard and use lead). The lead ban started with the justification of protecting the CA Condor and spread from there and while it is awesome that air rifles can exploit this "lead ban loophole" I wanted to point out it's not absolute and I have been directly effected by it so purposely got .25 rifles so I could hunt lead free when forced to.

Yes I pointed those two places out because they are so huge and one is right in the county where the original poster said he wants to hunt. DFG in general isn't really concerned with air rifles which is a good thing and I hope it stays that way. I actually have a very good setup for hunting in CA with the access I have to different places so I have no great need to go east but do (despite the lead ban loop hole) have a need to shoot lead free at times which is why I didn't consider anything other that .22 or .25 in my case when getting my new Kral pcp's. The .25 JSB GTO 16.54 and the Dynamic 17 grain .22 also the .22/.25 Kodiak Greens all shoot very well for me. I prefer to use lead of course but the lead free stuff has done just fine for me when I have needed to use it.

Maybe this will clear lead use in airguns...
