Anyone own a Maximus?

I don't own one, however, have been considering one.

Cost wise, there are a couple options.

Maximus from Pyramyd Air $380 in a kit with a pump. That's a good deal for Pyramyd, however, if you follow the banner to Crosman, (which isn't running as I type this, maybe it's a new years thing), there's a 25% discount so the $220 for the gun becomes $165 and I believe they run free shipping on Friday's ($18 value). the pump is $190 - 25% or about $145, so about $310 for the kit.

Filling the tank is an issue. If you don't already have an air tank and access to a paintball place to fill it, you will need a pump. The Benjamin pump works OK, and is the least expensive of the bunch. Tanks are MUCH BETTER, so if you can spring the $300 for a tank on Pyramyd Air.

So, cost wise, you are into it for $500 with a tank and if you play Crossman right, about $310 or a little more.

Essentially, the Maximus is a Discovery in synthetic. Of the two, I'd definitely go with the Maximus.

You will see a couple issues on the maximus though. The bolt pull will be heavy. I believe it's a 10 pound spring you are compressing. It's a long gun, but light. It's also reasonably accurate. shot count will be around 20 or a little more in .22. You might want to consider the .177 as it has a higher shot count with 30 or so. .177 will still kill a pigeon or rat, so might be a better choice if you have a pump. If you spring for a tank, no big deal. The Euro version (12 foot pound) gets 60 .177 shots per fill due to lower air use for lower energy at the muzzle. Still good out to 50 yards.

Sorry I can't offer anything else, this is just the research I've done so far with the chance of getting one myself. Personally, I'm, waiting for the Euro to become available in the US (haven't had the cash when it was available), It's threaded for a moderator, and from what I see, it's a fairly loud gun. So many choices in this hobby!!!!!!!!!!

Typically I would suggest to just stick with the pump for the little bit of chuckin that you're likely to do as the extra cost involved with the tank just isn't worth it but since you already have one then you're good to go.

Beyond that if you think you might like to do some indoor target shooting in the off months then a discovery is a good way to go since it can operate on both co2 and hpa. Shooting hpa indoors can be hard one the ears without hearing protection and thats where co2 is nice for that sort of thing otherwise the Maximus looks like a great way to go.

The banner is back. 25% off at Crosman using the code AGNATION at checkout. I don't know if every Friday is free shipping, but give it a try and save $18.

Oh, also forgot, the gun is noisy, so not city friendly. Some have been putting TKO moderators on (about $60) and say the moderator really helps. http://tko22.com/

These guys are based in Omaha, so the moderator should be completely legal for US Air Rifles. Blast that grey area in US Law for moderators!

Enjoy!

I have two of the .22 Maximus. Unless you want a wood stock on a Discovery I would buy the Maximus. One of mine does fine at 50 yards(the limit I would use it) and the other one is still in the box. They are a little loud and I have a NC moderator for mine, but don't always have it on. The trigger has a hard pull and some put a mrod trigger on them(same thing they do on the Discovery). And the hunter version comes with a scope for the same price.

I have both a maximum and discovery and would strongly suggest the maximus. Overall it's a little better gun. I get more shots per fill (25 vs 15 from 2000 down to 1000) than my discovery. My maximus tends to shoot most pellets ever so slightly more accurately. I have the hunter version and I attached a Jkhan moderator and it is really quiet.

I have the Maximus, great rifle. Consider the brass trigger kit and a TKO.
The brass trigger kit costs far less than marauder group; it comes with a new spring and two adjustment screws. I also have a Marauder, so I know what that trigger group feels like as well. The TKO makes it whisper quiet, and less likely to disturb other game in the area, which frequently gives the opportunity for follow-on shots. The 2000 pound pump up is much easier than the 3000 pound pump up on other air rifles. The un-tuned Maximus I have gives me about 25+ 800 (or more) FPS shots with a 14.66 grain 22 caliber pellet per fill. Seventeen of those shots have more than 850 fps. With a power adjuster (and some debounce), it is certain to give more.

I got one for my 9yr grandson. It is loud, hard to cock, a pain to load with a scope and it has a stiff trigger.Thats the bad. the good,It is a very light gun you can carry it all day.Easy to pump up with a hand punp, looks good and he can keep groups at under a inch at 25 yards. For the price it is a nice gun but it is a entry level pcp If you start putting on mods your just as well get a marauder or a hatsan

The load is not bad, once you shoot it a bit. My kid has one in the .177 and those little pellets can evade fat fingers sometimes. After shooting a few hundred, you will develop a technique that can load without looking. It is a matter of learning the manual of arms for the gun.

The sound level is NOT anywhere near a .22LR, rather on par with a heavy duty nail gun. Indoors it is pretty loud, outside it is a non issue for my area. The .177 take a 1.5 pumps per shot, so 20 shots takes 30 pumps from the Benjamin pump to re-fill. For a cost effective entry level, the Maximus is tough to beat. We have a 3x9x40 AO scope on ours. Point blank range (cross hair hold +/- 1/4") from 15 to 35 yards. Super easy to shoot and a heck of a value.

my only complaint is the RWS pellets that came bundled from Pyramid Air. They would shoot 3 inch grours from 20 yards, while Crossman premier Hollow Points will print clover leaf groups. See my user photo for a 30 yard group, shot open sights off a rest at 30 yards. Top hole (not in picture frame) was sight in shot, followed by adjustment and fire for effect. 3 touching holes.

Mine is very accurate. Likes the H&N Barracudas that weight 23gr if I remember correctly, not looking at the tin currently. Get high rings for your scope and it won't be in the way while you're loading the pellets. I have a TKO which helps immensely on the report and the brass trigger mod, which helps but is just okay. I've heard of people breaking the bolt handle off, but I'm not sure if it's a quality issue, or just improper use.

"JimNM"The only broken bolt handle I have read about was from shipping damage, and it was fixed Pronto by crosman. Have there been more reports?
Just one guy in a facebook group I'm in. Like I said, I can't really vouch for if it's user error or a quality issue. I own one myself, and I'm not really sure how he's managed to break his. I have contemplated switching to a stainless steel bolt though. But for different reasons.
