Mike B, which guns did you use for each event?

I spotted for Mike in the long range match. Impressive shooting. And I was impressed with the Altaros slugs. Altaros slugs were used by Mike for 1st (49.5gr .25) and 2nd for Gabe (40gr .22). I shot my 7mm and got 3rd place shooting a 107gr cast NOE BBT slug.

Targets were at about 118, 141, 166, 188, 230, and 362yds. Five shots at each. Though we could throw out either the 118 or 362yd target, and keep 25 shots for score. Going in, I expected that the lower energy slug guns could be more accurate than the big bore airguns. My 7mm holds together well at long distances, but it’s not a 1moa gun. The 118yd target was the toughest from an MOA measurement. I’m fairly certain that I was the only competitor who threw out that target score. I don’t remember any of the 100fpe guns connecting for a ten point hit on the 362yd target, though I saw a few big bores (over 200fpe) do so.

The match was formatted so that lower powered slug guns could compete with the big bores. It brought more competitors into the long range game. Now I want Altaros to make cnc slugs for my .257 and 7mm.

Thanks Scott. Those 49.5 Altaros Smooth are certainly next generation (and the Panthera 600mm was perfect) ... For every target, despite the swirling quartering wind 5 to 10 mph, I held the dot left edge each target center height... The 234-yard target was further right, so I held middle-middle for each shot since the wind was pushing slightly left but about the same as spin drift right. That five-shot group (234 yards) might have measured an inch or only slightly more. Certainly, well inside MOA.
I spotted for Scott, who shot great! If we were to add up his misses, the total distance would be less than an inch, he was that close...

Thanks for the report.

Were the quadrant targets sized larger as the distances were increased? I'm assuming so but how big was the center and how wide, as well as tall, were the targets, at each distance?

Maybe Wayne could answer this/?

Hi Steve the yardage turned out to be about:
-
Yardage- 118 - 10 point bull = 2" and 5 point out side paddles = 12" x 12"
Yardage- 141 - 10 point bull = 2.5" and 5 point out side paddles = 12" x 12"
Yardage- 168 - 10 point bull = 3" and 5 point out side paddles = 15" x 15"
Yardage- 188 - 10 point bull = 4.5" and 5 point out side paddles = 18" x 18"
Yardage- 241 - 10 point bull = 6" and 5 point out side paddles = 24" x 24"
Yardage- 360 - 10 point bull = 10" and 5 point out side paddles = 36" x 36" (This will be a paper/cardboard target, so lower fpe equipment, can still play if they feel they can reach it)

Mike and his equipment preformed incredibly well! And this venue has some very, very tricky winds. The Altaros slugs really did well in that crazy wind.

It will be interesting to see if that performance can be duplicated.. come on down and try folks!

Thanks for that info Wayne.

Wow, those 10 point bulls would not be easy in calm winds. That says something about the Panthera, Altaros slugs, and Mike's shooting!

Thanks Steve. It was blowing pretty good (5 to 10 mph, gusts higher) the entire time I shot, mostly from over my left shoulder, and I held left edge on those first 4 targets. For the 234-yard target, it was slightly over my right shoulder, and I held dead center. I think that five shot group was very close to an inch, maybe a bit more, as were all the groups...

Those Altaros ATP Smooth slugs are REVOLUTIONARY!!! As I think I've said, I shot the 49.5 grain in .25 caliber at approx. 885 fps. A 15-shot ORION magazine usually returned an ES of 3 or 4 fps, sometimes less. I had the reg pressure right about 130 bar for 86 FPE. The G1 BC is a confirmed 0.21, but I used the G7 BC profile at 0.111 for the calculations.

The Athlon Midas BTR gen2 4.5-27x MIL scope was excellent with perfect elevation tracking as I dialed the distances.
FYI, @Gabester (Gabe) finished 2nd shooting .22 Altaros King 40 grain slugs at 850 fps from his Impact.
The .25 FX Panthera 600mm is VERY easy to shoot at that power level - hardly any jump or barrel movement. I also used a Silent Thunder Ordnance (STO) Pugio to quiet the gun down a bit. It does NOT affect accuracy in the least. And an AccuTac W-2 bipod for superior stability.

Congrats to Gabe also!

So I'm guessing it was the 360 yard target you threw out as far as score? Did you engage it too and if so how well did that go?
Yes, it was paper and not a swinger, so I couldn't tell if I hit it or not... I think I got messed up because I could only dial to 320 yards and needed to holdover the additional with the SFP Midas BTR gen2 scope... Plus, even with spotting scopes we couldn't tell where the slugs hit the way it was set up. 360 yards was 22 MIL in my setup. Prior to the competition I had only verified my DOPE to 286 yards, and it was spot on at that distance. The gun is "minute of squirrel" out to that range...

I recommended to Wayne that for future events use a swinger at between 295 and 300 yards and count all six targets. I'll be installing my new Athlon Cronus prior to RMAC and should be able to dial to 350 or 360 yards with that scope.

Since it was near impossible (even with my spotting scope) to see our hits/misses on the 360 yard target, we had to trust our dope. The 10pt center was about the same as a 1.5" field target at 50 yards, but getting the dope right is difficult for that distance, and no way to correct for the mostly unseen misses.

After I shot the 360 yard target, I asked the scorer to take a picture of it before they prepped it for the next shooter. I put yellow circles on the picture to indicate my impacts. 10pts for each shot that was inside the 2.8moa center. 5pts if on the white board.

Nice, it doesn't get much better than that!
