Archery target for pellet backstop?

Hey guys,

Currently, I have 1/4 to 5/16 inch steel plates behind my pellet targets and I don't really care to hear loud "ping" when my pellet hits. I cut thin wooden sheets of plywood into 1-foot squares and stick splatter targets on them. I don't need to hear the pellet strike, I can clearly so the impact on the splatter target.

So, I was wondering, do any of you use an archery target as a pellet backstop (I could hang my spatter target on the front of it) - it sure would make shooting my PCP air rifles even more back yard friendly because the strike of the pellet on the steel is louder than the action of the PCP gun. If you do, does the archery target stop the pellets for very long? I shoot .177, .22 and .25 caliber PCPs (all rifles)

To help you see what I mean, I included a picture of one of my steel backed pellet target beside one of my archery targets. The white duct tape squares on the archery target are aim points for my Scorpyd 135 Crossbow. It got expensive shooting that Scorpyd at the same bullseye - arrows hitting arrows. The target stops crossbow bolts fine, and I was wondering how it would do with pellets. I've shot it a few times and didn't see any pellets going all the way through - but didn't know how long that would last.

So, thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bobby

I'm using a Tidy Cats litter bucket, 1 bag of rubber mulch (0.8 cu ft, still bagged) packed into it and single layer of over lapping duct tape. I think the bag of mulch weighed 12 lbs, so maybe 13 with the bucket. I shot around 10,000 pellets into the last one without issue.

Redtide, the more I read, the more I'm thinking this setup is what I'm looking for

Thanks

If you had free access, used shrink wrap (like they wrap Pallets of stuff in). Fill a standard archery size bag (burlap or plastic weave) as full as humanly possible & seal. This will stop a 150lb crossbow bolt w/damage and they pull out with 2 fingers and it will stop a 9mm. When it gets thin in one spot place on ground and walk on it a bit. They certainly are light and weather proof.

My kids gave me a Crosman pellet trap. The one that folds and is plastic except for an angled steel back plate. It uses fabric in front of the plate to stop bounce backs and make it quieter. My Prod blew holes in it. So I rebuilt it in about the same shape but out of scrap 3/4 plywood. The front is a piece of cardboard and I use spring slips to hold the target. Inside I fill it with shredded tire mulch. I have shot it with my 25 caliber Avenger tuned as high as 40 fpe so far and have had no issue with the pellet trap. The pellets do not slam into the metal back so no ping. I'm about ready to turn the regulator up but I am pretty sure it will handle all the Avenger can put out.

I've had a few errant shots hit the edge of the 3/4 plywood and it cracks it some but not so much that it affects function. The Avenger will shoot through 3/4 plywood but not on edge and not with fairly thick metal in front of it and not after going through shredded tire mulch.
