Are there Co2 cartridges that are better than others, conversely, are there others that I should stay away from?

I read somewhere that Crosman cylinder diameter is the most consistent. But knowing how they are produced, there should not be a diameter variance. One of my CO2 pistols recommends using only Crosman cartridges so that’s all I have on my shelf. I’ve never owned any other brand so I can’t say if there is a size difference amongst different brands. I can measure a couple with a micrometer and post the size if some folks have other brands.

I just happened to have 20 Crossman cylinders in front of me, so I miked 'em. Just a quick measurement near the center of the cylinder. The Average diameter was 0.729 inches. Max 0.737, Min 0.725.

If you shoot a lot of co2 guns that use the 12 gram cartridges, here is where i found in my opinion a good deal on them.
www.redrockminnesota.com they come to $0.40 each if you get the 450 case. I purchased one case about a year ago. They say made in Japan on mine.

I had heard that some CO2 cartridges came with lube inside. At the time, I had Crosman and Umarex cartridges. I cut an empty cartridge of each brand in half. The Crosman cartridge had some lube and grit inside of it. The Umarex cartridge was completely clean. I never bought Crosman cartridges again.

Just my 2 cents. I only use Umarex as well. I did the same thing as Yamo.
I cut 4 different brands in half. I was surprised at the amount of "stuff" I found inside the "name " brands.
I only shoot the Umarex P2P .50 cal pepper ball guns now. Trying to clean up my Karma a little.

Wow interesting! I've only used Crosman. I'm going to have to try that and if I find the samething I'll try the Umarex. Thanks for sharing

most common item was oil. Either meant to lube the weapon or perhaps manufacturing lubrication from forming the cartridges.

Just curious. It never crossed my mind to check the size of a co2 cylinder.
What could possibly be the issue of some are 10 thou bigger or smaller in diameter? Every co2 gun I have locks em in by length.

I did this a few years ago... as best I can remember, small, hard particles of grit that you would NOT want getting into a CO2 valve.

It definitely wasn't metal particles, as these stayed near the cut, because of the oil on the inside. IIRC, they were very small (smaller than sand), dark particles, not shiny metallic particles.

I finally cut a couple of Crosman CO2 cartridges and of course when I cut it there was some grit inside (duh) so I used my pipe cutter and cut a couple of them and the only thing I saw was a darker dry color (almost black) on one half of the cartridge. I can only assume its something that is part of the manufacturing . I don't have any other brands to compare my findings maybe next time I'll try some Umarex.

I found https://redrockminnesota.com/co2-cartridges/ had the best value. They have bulk pricing on some of their products that seem way too good. I tested them out and didn't have any issues. So I've started using them for the last couple years.

I have heard many, (well maybe 20 or so people), reporting that the Crossman C02 cartridges' have "Gunk" inside. I have used Crossman C02s' for many years. So in this video I test both UMAREX and Crossman C02 cartridges' then cut them open and have a look see. Please forgive the editing Microsoft changed the video editor on me so now I probably need a better computer and a better video editor. Anyway, here is the video.
One final note I looked at both Crossman and UMAREX CO2 Cartridges.
No GUNK, "Stuff" or any other materials powder or otherwise in either cartridges'. Also on my Youtube channel.
