Are we predator or prey? Depends on where we live.

Speed is fine, accuracy is final. I'll take that 9mm over nothing.

Always all this "he-man" talk about 44s and such. Once upon a time my cousin was shooting in the creek bed in front of the ranch house. He was shooting a Python or Anaconda (I don't remember) in 44 mag. He had a tin can about 15 yards out. My sons and I walked out to watch him shoot. BOOOM! Sand spray and a miss. BOOOM! Sand spray and a miss. I said, "You are shooting a lot of lead but you are not hitting much tin can, try this?" and pulled out my Glock compact in S&W 40. He just sneered at it, "I got about four of those." I prefer something with a bit more stopping power! Well, being the sort of gentle soul you all know me to be, I just took a stance and shot "pop" and the can went about five or ten yards, "pop" and the can went about five or ten yards, "pop" and yep you guessed it another five or ten yards. Then I thought, "I can make that shot." The can was at about thirty five or forty yards. I just smiled and said, "Now hit that!". I walked off. As I was walking away one of the boys was heard saying, "Can I shoot that? I've never shot one of those." Half an hour later and twenty or thirty VERY expensive misses later they wandered back into the house. "Anybody ever hit that can?" "No Dad, Terry has gone home, and neither of us ever hit it. You know that gun really kicks." I probably should have told him I shot expert on the USBP test when I shot quals with BORTAC that year ;) :p . True story. Note: Mind you I did not say I was in USBP or BORTAC, but that is a different story.

If you can't hit it, all the power in the world is useless. First learn to shoot it. Then learn to shoot it when a man, or a bear, or a rabid dog is rushing your terrified arse. THEN pick your caliber.

I figure in the time it takes one of you world class pistoleros to hit that big ol bear with your 44 (about 1200fpe) mag three times, I can hit it nine times with my Glock 40 (450fpe). I might need to maintain the presence of mind to put my shots where they will do the most damage but I figure nine of those in the face of ANYTHING in North America will probably turn it around and if it won't that .44 isn't going to do the job either. Did I mention that little Glock has a 13 round mag.

We always talk so much smack... why do we do that?

I live in Montana.......

every couple years we get a bear hanging around the neighborhood.... then they wonder off as the summer moves thru the season....

IVe opened the door and been 4 feet from a sow and 2 cubs....

had a blakc bear cub climb up on teh roof....

had a mountain lion in the yard once...... When fish and game here become aware of a lion/cougar in a given area, the close those trails. Word gets around pretty quick, as trails around here are used by a lot of folks, hikers, fishermen and mountain bikers. The news usualy helps spread the word too

44 mag vs 9mm vs pepper spray..... Ive come to learn its NOT the weapon, its your reaction time. IF you see the bear, and he sees you at 50 yards, and he charges, you ve got about 3 second to understand your being charged, decide what to do, do it and try to get a ggod shot/spray off. seen a lot of folks with the bear spray in the water bottle pocket of their back pack. Not the best place for deployment under duress

Have been deer hunting way, and run across a moose... wheile they wont eat you, they are very capable of severly stomping you. Many folks I know say theyd rather bump into a bear than a moose protecting her calf or defending his harem....

And Yellowstone...... Every year some one (some years many...) gets gored by a bison. Always a stupid tourist who hasnt been in nature since the 5th grade field trip to the zoo.... and thinks thats what YNP is....

Predator or prey depends on yer attitude, your preparedness, your perception and your prayers.....

Dan,

you've had some pretty spectacular run-in's with nature where you live. Pretty cool!

I'd love to see some of that myself! But the Peruvian jungle protects its own — behind a thick canopy of leaves, so you don't see nothing but GREEN!

Well, I do get a falcon hunting and feeding on a pigeon in my backyard every few months.
