Mike, It does seem odd that the rifle match would start on Friday but it is indeed Thursday for pistol and rifle on Friday and Saturday. Here is what I received in an email from the club
Thx
Dan

Note that it is a Thursday (pistol) and Friday, Saturday (rifle) match at Ben Avery shooting facility.

This same info will show up on the forums and the club website shortly.

Unfortunately, the pistol match is on Thursday
The rifle match is Friday and Saturday.
We could not get the range on Sunday because of a scheduling screw up with the pistol silhouette shooters having a match that day. This is the best we could do based on a venue change request and vote from the membership.
Yes, it seems odd, but we will do the best that we can with the time frame allotted.

I have to agree with the two gentlemen above,

I’ve shot the shotgun sporting clays state shoot at Ben Avery a couple times and their course is top rate and beautiful.

Last year was my first time at the AZ State FT shoot in Flagstaff and it was a beautiful location and it seemed like everyone had a great time and everyone was really nice.

However, from the pictures I’ve seen accompanying shoot reports for FT from Ben Avery it looks a lot like shooting field target from a large parking lot. Devoid of any vegetation or anything “natural”. Just flat dirt.

I don’t know if I’d want to show up for this or not.

A screwup happens and the show is abandoned ? doesn't seem very sportsman like to me . But it does give others a chance to win n your place .
The scheduling screwup is very minor in the grand scheme of things. But the venue change on the other hand is viewed as a huge mistake, perhaps bordering on blunderous. A lot of people love the history of the State Championship being held at the Mormon Lake locale. Myself included!
Thx
Dan

Okay, for all of you that are disappointed about the state match not happening at Mormon Lake.....
A request was proposed by a number of the club members, to us, about having the state match at Ben Avery. A number of reasons were given. We put the proposal out to the club membership with the response voting in favor of the change. Obviously, there were a few, very few, that did not like that idea, but, we went with the membership's wishes to give this a try. That is not to say that it will not go back to the Mormon lake venue in the future.

If and when we get some younger members willing to do the work to coordinate the entire event, haul all the equipment up to Mormon Lake, set up, run the match, tear down, then haul it all back to the storage at BASF, then the state shoot may go back up there. Personally, I informed the troops two years ago that I will not be able to do the above due to the condition of my knees. (Yes, they are getting worse, and yes, I have lost 20 lbs so far to take pressure off, but I am not interested in going under the knife.) Others have attempted the effort and realize how much work (and expense), and wear and tear on their bodies it actually is. No other takers stepped forward to offer. Look at what is going on with other "established" clubs and matches around the country. Thus, we have what we have for this year and next. None of us are getting any younger, yet we still want to offer a quality match where everyone can just show up, shoot, then go home immediately afterwards. Nothing can get better if something doesn't change.....

What we do have in our favor at this venue, is more availability of lodging at AFFORDABLE prices, more availability of dining options for those with "culinary issues", closer access of the airport for those who fly into town from elsewhere, a dry, shady, covered firing line in the event of rain (remember 2 years ago?), running water, flush toilets, and convenient parking. Oh, and no errant blades of grass to inpede the pellet flight. Trust me, we hear all kinds of "concerns", and this venue shift seems to take care of all the issues except for scenery.

I am not overly fond of the change either. I like Mormon Lake, and miss it, but we have to look at what we are asking our members to do, then come up with a workable game plan, and still provide the aforementioned quality program. Our current club officers have been in place for years, with no others interested or willing to run for office, yet we continue to carry on. AND we are still offering 12 open monthly matches a year, and 52 weekly club TRAC matches a year. Folks, we are doing the best we can and the club paid membership continues to grow because of it.

We (the club officers) appreciate your concern, and really appreciate that you have voiced your concern, and look forward to seeing you at the match.

Thank you for responding on an open forum where all can see, read, and understand the issues.

Respectfully (and I mean that),

Mark Kauffman, secretary, Airgunners of Arizona, Inc.

I am not a member, but applaud your response . This is what i hear in most clubs no matter what the club is about . Officers are in a lot of years and no one steps up to help or take over . and helpers/workers are getting less in number . AT my gun club one of the officers put together what it would cost to hire people to put on one of our events . this was figured in minimum wage . The room fell silent .
the club President and Vice president can only hold an office for 2 years (in the bylaws) these two have been trading office for near 20 years now . No one will step up . And this is a very small club and not much time or work .

"Our current club officers have been in place for years, with no others interested or willing to run for office, yet we continue to carry on."

You, Larry, and MaryAnn are some steadfast pillars of FT !!!! I don't know how you all carry on like you do because I got burned out with the responsibility I had for the decade plus that I volunteered.

Even though I'd rather have the state match at Mormon lake I totally see the hurdles you face so I don't blame you or Larry for having the state match down there.

Thank you all for everything you do for the club! What a blessing it's been to us!

Probably won't make it to the state match because of other shooting sports I'm doing locally but have fun and our hearts are with you.
