I might be wrong but it looks like an Arizona black rattlesnake. Don't think you get timber rattlesnakes any further west than east Texas. Rattlesnakes are cool animals, but never good to find around your house. Glad you found him before he found you

Yes, FX 400 .22, It was coming out from a Rock Squirrel hole under my house. I took the photo before I ran to get my FX.
Sorry to say I could not get a head shot from my position. After 3 shots to the body, it managed to slither back down the hole.
I covered up the hole and haven't seen any Rock Squirrels since.

3 shots in .22 cal and the snake still managed to slither off. What was the dang snake wearing? Bullet proof coating !!!!!!! That must be one tough snake for it to slither away. I've never shot a snake before but I would have guessed 1 maybe 2 body shots should have been enough to put it down.

Well, you can cut their heads off and they can still bite you so yeah, they are tough critters.
