Arken EPL-4 Its not a Athlon

Maybe its apples to oranges but I give up on the Arken scopes, I ordered a ARKEN EPL-4 6x24 The reticle is so thin I can not see it and this is there FFP scope,, I can use the scope if I turn the light on and have it at full power 24 , when I turn it down to 12 power I can not even see the light of the reticle, I know my problem other than being old and eye sight not being 20/20, I have a lot of Athlon scopes and not just the HELOS, but I am comparing this scope to the Athlon ARGOS 6x25-50 , To me and my opinion for what its worth the ATHLON blows the ARKEN scope clean out of the water, HANDS DOWN,,, I have tried a lot of other scopes and I always come back to the ATHLON scopes..
I do like the light weight of the Arken EPL-4 but that really doesn't matter when you cant see the reticle , This is just a FYI and if someone ask me about scopes , ATHLON you can not go wrong...

That's good info to know and thanks for sharing. I have been looking at getting one just so I know for myself. I personally haven't looked through any Arken scope yet but I have head from a few that the trucks is thin and hard to see. I have quite a few Athlon scopes of many variations of power and I like them. Very good clarity and function smooth.

Just to mention:

🔘(1)
Many scope manufacturers publish detailed reticle diagrams, where they tell you how thick the crosshair lines are.
(FYI: FX's Element scopes have so far avoided giving us that information, likewise Hawke.)

🔘(2)
Sometimes (case in point the Athlon scope you mention) — the MIL version of the scope has a different thickness than the MOA version.
(I guess you have the Argos BTR Gen. 2 in MOA?)

🔘(3)
Just because one manufacturer chooses to make reticle lines thinner than another mfctr. doesn't make it a bad FFP scope — because target shooter usually want thin lines (so bulls does not get covered up). Hunters usually want thick lines (for quick target acquisition).

➠ I try to include reticle line thickness as one of the specs in my Scopes Specs Tables. But some manufacturers refuse to hand over that information...).

Mike,

I have 4 Athlon Argos 6x24s - two Gen 1s and two Gen 2s.

I also have the Arken EPL-4 6x24.

I was thinking of replacing all my Argos with EPL-4s … for precisely the reason that you DISLIKE the Arken - because the reticle lines are much THINNER on the Arken EPL-4. If you are precision target shooting, I find the reticle lines get too fat on the Argos above 18x.

Also, I find the glass to be better on the EPL-4 vs. the Argos.

I also have an Athlon Midas Tac 6x24 FFP. This is an excellent scope for target shooting with a reticle line thickness about the same as the EPL-4. The Midas Tac lacks illumination (I don’t use illumination anyways).

I find The EPL-4 to be a better scope (for target shooting) than the Argos - and a steal at Arken’s recent sale price! This is from a guy that loves Athlon - I own 7 Athlon scopes.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have two Arken SH4s and 4 Athlons; one Heras SFP 6-24, one Helos FFP 6-24, and two Midas-Tac 6-24X50. To be honest, the Midas scopes have fairly fine reticles, more so than the Arkens. The Helos is on the other end. Just fat enough for 100 yard use. The Heras is just right for most applications. I just don't like FFP scopes where the reticle disappears at low magnification. I never thought the Arken reticles were extremely fine. I do agree that the Athlon scopes are a cut above all the rest, but they cost more too. I never had one of the cheaper Athlons like the Neos, Argos or.. so I can't comment on them.

It would be interesting to hear from someone who has both the SH4 Arken & the newer EPL-4.

I stayed away from the SH4 Arkens because they were big, heavy, min. Parallax was 25 yards - they seemed intended for center fire rifles.

I just compared my Arken EPL-4 6x24 vs. Athlon Argos Gen 1 6x24 vs. Athlon Argos Gen 2 6x24 vs. Athlon Midas Tac 6x24… all at 24X. The EPL-4 and Argos (both Gens) have similar reticle line thickness. The Midas Tac is noticeably thinner. However, the EPL-4 has a floating center dot (like the Midas Tac). This is better (in my opinion) for target shooting than the crosshairs on the Argos.

I have both the SH4 Gen2 and the EPL4. Both are the lower power 4-16x zoom, and I think that makes a big difference in image quality on lower end scopes. I like the thin reticles and prefer them to thicker one found on other brands. If you cant see the illuminated reticle on 12x zoom something is off, either your eyes or the scope adjustments. I much prefer the SH4 but its waaaay heavier. The EPL4 is on my "lightweight" walk around Impact and its a great fit. Has all the options I wanted in a pretty light weight package considering. But I also am fully aware it is a budget scope with an aim on durability. Everyone has different eyes so not all makes or models will work for everyone. We are very luck to have so many excellent choices these days.

Would anyone recommend the Arken Optics EPL4 FFP VHR at $329 price on Amazon.com right now?

Or should I look for something better? Price is an object, but precision is my main objective. (smile)

I already have an Athlon Argos Gen1 8-34 ffp. Not bad, but the glass on mine isn't the best and they are heavy.

24x zoom is my minimum, even at close ranges. Yeah, I am not normal... (chuckle)

All my best!

That is being shipped by Arken's Amazon store. They are offering free shipping and free returns. As long as you don't mount it, and if you don't like it, you should be able to at least check it out for free.

I like my first one so much, I bought a second.

I’m waiting on refund from Amazon on EPL-4 6-24 I purchased. Really wanted to love the scope, but it would not focus down to 10 yards as claimed. I needed that for my basement range. Backyard range it would have been fine. The one I received also had substandard anodizing - blotched looking. Was also shipped loose in a larger box with NO packing material at all.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll just move the 4.5-27 to the DAR when it is fixed and put the Leupold 3-9x33 EFR on the Fortitude as the Fortitude has been relegated to very close shots (15 yards or close) until I send it off to Crosman to have the regulator repaired or replaced.

The Leupold is a fine scope, I just don't like the simple duplex reticle and the fact that max power is ONLY 9x. (smile)

Thanks for the reply. It was very helpful!

All my best!
