FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 07/22/2023
It was another hot and challenging FT course at ASC this month. Eric P and I showed up early on Friday morning to set out the course, and we were done before the temps cracked the mid-90’s. Hallelujah. I kept the shorter the course and used all my lanes that have the shooting box in the shade, but Mother Nature graced us with a “cool” front that kept temps out of the 100’s today and only in the mid-90’s F. The course was yet again 56 shots on 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane except on the offhand and kneeling lanes that had two targets each. Even with the continued hot temperatures (which will last until November here in Texas!), fifteen shooters from as far as San Antonio and Tulsa showed up to contest the course. The “cool” front brought shifting winds from the NE at about 8-10 mph this month, which increased the difficult factor on some of the less-sheltered lanes. The average Troyer this month was 31.4, SD 6.42, Avg Dist 29 yds, and Avg KZ 1.04”. We started on time at 9:00am after short safety and rules meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting. I heard more than a few times utterances of “…that dang wind…did you see that pellet move?...I don’t know why I missed, I held dead on the KZ.” Competing in the wind will make you a better shooter fellas.
When we finished about three hours later, everyone helped pick up the targets on a lane and put them in buckets for me to put away in the shed. Thanks again to everyone who helps me setup, run and takedown the course each month. Kudos to all of you!!
Hunter PCP had 9 shooters competing. 1st place was Mark Welker shooting his RAW TM1000 with a scorching 52/56. Second place was a tie and had to be settled by shootoff. Derrick Wall and Thom Davies sat down to address a Raccoon with a 5/8” KZ at 43 yards and gusting, swirling winds. Thom won the coin toss and went first. Both shooters missed their first shot on the pesky raccoon, and both knocked it down with their second shot! We decided to let them have one more round before I moved the target, Thom missed it, but Derrick knocked it down. Derrick Wall finishes 2nd shooting his Kalibrgun Cricket 2 Tac with Sightron SIII scope with 49/56 beating out Thom Davies who finished 3nd (49/56) shooting his FX Elite also with a Sightron SIII scope.
In Hunter Piston, we had three shooters. I finished 1st today with a 31/56 shooting my Air Arms ProSport with Sightron SIII scope; the first time I’ve shot this rifle in about five years.
We had one WFTF PCP and two Unlimited shooters today. You can see all the scores, finishing positions, and equipment list below. Congrats to everyone and I hope that you had fun!
Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website https://airgunshoot.com/ that shows your score on each lane, your hit percentage by lane or near/mid/far targets, how you compare to your class average, your class winner, and the HOA winner. Thanks to Scott Cotton for his work on this, you should be able to tease out some areas where you can improve and hopefully finish higher in the standings.
Our next match will be on Saturday August 26 which is our usual 4th Saturday. This match will start promptly at 9:00am (if not a little earlier) since we are in the warmer months.
I am happy to announce here that ASC will be hosting the 2023 Republic of Texas Field Target Grand Prix match November 17-19, 2023. There will be a pistol match on Friday afternoon, then rifle matches on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We will have catered lunches and great swag and raffle prizes. Keep an eye out for an announcement on the forums and by email with a link to registration.
