FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 06/24/2023
Wow, it was a hot one in Mansfield at the ASC FT Match today…” hot” meaning the outside temperature. Texas has had some unseasonable temps and high humidity the last two weeks, and today was no different. Knowing that the match temperature would be high, I decided to shorten the course just a bit, and use all my lanes that have the shooting box in the shade, so that hopefully none of the shooters would get heat exhaustion. The course was 56 shots on 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane except on the offhand and kneeling lanes that had two targets each. Even with the hot temperatures, fifteen shooters from as far as San Antonio showed up to contest the course. The “feels like” temps started in the low 90’s and rose to 103 while the winds were mostly from the south at about 11mph. Thank God for the wind or it would’ve been miserable! The average Troyer this month was 31.4, SD 6.42, Avg Dist 29 yds, and Avg KZ 1.04”. We started almost on time at 9:10am after short safety and rules meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting.
When we finished about three hours later, everyone helped pick up the targets on a lane and put them in buckets for me to put away in the shed. Thanks again to everyone who helps me run and takedown the course each month. Kudos!!
Hunter PCP had 11 shooters competing. 1st place was Derrick Wall shooting his Kalibrgun Cricket 2 Tac with Sightron scope with 49/56 beating out Ron Robinson who finished 2nd by two points (47/56) shooting his Daystate Wolverine with a vintage Weaver scope. David Turner finished 3rd with a 44/56.
In Hunter Piston, we had two shooters. Chris Simmons finished 1st today with a 37/56 shooting something beating me shooting my very first adult airgun, an HW97K with a 33/56.
We had one WFTF Piston and one Unlimited shooter today. Each of these shooters finished 1st in class. Congrats to everyone and I hope that you had fun!
Even though the course was a little shorter and a little easier than the last many months, the scores overall were lower. I attribute this drop in performance to the high heat and humidity, and how they affect out steadiness, concentration, and stamina. If you have the time and the means, I suggest that you all practice in adverse conditions, so that you know how to prepare and recognize the effects and hopefully adjust for them. You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website https://airgunshoot.com/ that shows your score on each lane, your hit percentage by lane or near/mid/far targets, how you compare to your class average, your class winner, and the HOA winner. Thanks to Scott for his work on this, you should be able to tease out some areas where you can improve and hopefully finish higher in the standings.
Our next match will be on Saturday July 22 which is our usual 4th Saturday. This match will start promptly at 9:00am (if not a little earlier) since we are in the warmer months. Next month we will also use timers again to help everyone move along at a good pace and get done before it gets too hot.
