Ataman AP16 Review

That is a 13xx converted to PCP.

That's a sweet looking cylinder. Where'd you come up with that?

To my best knowledge it is a krugergun conversion kit from Russia. I found a guy selling them in the country of Georgia. But he no longer sells them, not sure if due to covid or what.

This morning I took it apart as far as I felt comfortable doing so. I removed the grips, the handle, the top piece and the side cover for the trigger. Essentially everything held in place by screws. I'm not sure how to get to the hammer or hammer spring, it appears there are a could pins holding that part on. I don't want to attempt removing those and marring anything that could void the warranty, so at this point, I stopped and am waiting to hear back from PA. Also, before doing any of this, it's no longer cocking at all, so I suspect something broke and is impeding the full return of the hammer to the cocked position.

That's a bummer. Hopefully they get you taken care of quickly. Shame, I always have heard great things about the AP16. Also, thanks for the info on the red dot. I'm going to get one. $24! 👀 I paid more than that for mine.

Well, it's on it's way back to PA. They sent me an RMA and a return shipping label. Hopefully, it's a fast turnaround and the next one has a butter smooth cocking lever like I've read and heard about.

Odoyle, it should be back at PA early next week, so keep your eye out on the refurbs! LOL! The serial number on the one I just returned is: 502477. It would be interesting to see if it shows back up here. When I boxed it up, I noticed the tag on the outside of the box. I don't know is this was new or not, the looks the th S/N on the outside of the box was 501676... Also, I was a little concerned the manufacture date is 070619, for paying full price for a new air pistol, I was expecting something that wasn't already a year and a half old!

Well, the honeymoon is over! Went to shoot it some this evening and it feels like something is binding, bad. To the point I can hardly cock it. I put a couple drops of silicone oil on the bolt, but it didn't help. Sometimes I can't cock it at all, other time it's just really stiff. I sent an e-mail to PA requesting an RMA and a replacement, not sure what's up with this one.

How easily should these cock? I have seen some videos on YouTube that say the action is really smooth and easy to cock, so I think something's gone wrong on this one.

Did they send you the mag adjustment tool with the AP16? The mag may just need the center turned in a tiny bit. I've had mags bind before and this was the fix.

Yes, I did get the magazine adjustment tool, I tried that, but it won't cock with or without the magazine installed. I suspect something broke inside where the hammer and hammer spring reside. It's as if something is binding and it won't allow the cocking lever to retract the hammer far snout to catch the sear and cock. Since I got it, the cocking felt rough, not smooth at all. I wasn't expecting it to feel like my FX Dreamline when I cocked it, but I wasn't expecting it to feel like a Hatsan cocking either! 😁 I'm hoping this is just a fluke and the next one will be butter smooth like I hear it should be!

Thank looks sharp! Much nicer looking with that moderator attached.

I received shipping notification from PA this morning, my replacement will be here on Saturday. I did call them and mentioned the mismatched serial numbers and the older build date, so hopefully, they pulled one that at least will make me think it's new and not a refurb!

As for the dates, I ordered a standard air cylinder and barrel from Krale, the date on that air cylinder was 10/16! I questioned it and Krale said all the air cylinders in their most recent shipment from Ataman were dated 2016. They said Ataman's explanation was the tubes were built in 2016, but not assembled until just before they shipped, have never been filled with air and are perfectly safe. That, to me, sounds fishy as well, but as long as they honor the warranty and will replace it if it explodes before the 10 year life cycle is up in 2030, I guess I'll be okay... 😆

Yes that seems a bit upsetting , but I'sure you can trust what Krale told you ; it's a very serious dealer , top class service. Living in Belgium , I ordered a LOT of guns and others items from Krale and never had a problem. Orders are delivered one day later.

Ironically , an Ataman cylinder is in my next order from Krale and I won't hesitate.

I'm not to concerned, the cylinder appears to be in good condition. If it were covered with corrosion, I'd not feel that way.

I'd be curious to see what date is on the cylinder you receive. Are you ordering a cylinder for the AP16?

You're not making me feel very good here. I'm thinking of getting an P16 ! I've got a Holosun red dot sight just waiting to be used on something.

Any news as to your problem ?

And yeah, those carbine things are pretty bad. They musta been designed by a guy, after a bad drunken breakup with an old girlfriend, and finding out, she gave him the crabs..!

Mike

I have a micro red dot for it. It's a Tricon knock-off I got from AliExpress!

They shoulda just sold it in the USA domestically rather than ship them all the way to China Aliexpress to sell back to US. HAHAHA...Might even be cheaper too...HAHAHAHA...

I had couple scopes I tried with natural light illumination that were kinda close believe it or not.

The replacement shipped out yesterday, it's supposed to be here tomorrow. I'm hoping it's a good one! I haven't heard what the problem was, probably won't. They'll either send it back to Ataman or fix it and it'll show up in the refurb section of PA!

I've had the Ataman P2C kit. While functional I find it makes a nice compact pistol look big and clunky. Also the hinge on the stock is wobbly. Won't knock it - I had fun with mine before I sold it. If I were to go carbine again I would definitely reach out to Rink to see if they could make one of the carbine pistol stocks https://www.formgriffe.de/en/shpSR.php?p1=446.

FedEX dropped off my replacement AP16 late yesterday afternoon, so I didn't get a chance to do much other than check the action, which I'm happy to report is much smoother than the last one, and the other positive, the serial number on the AP16 actually matched the serial number on the box this time! It's looking like I'm back in business. Hopefully, I'll get some trigger time today!

This morning I mounted the micro read dot, the pierce grips and a tiny LDC. Sh's ready to be sighted in!

No arm twisting required! It's the Huma Air, Modular Air Moderator MOD30-2/0 (Mini), with one of the sections removed. You can double the size by adding the other section back to it, if needed. I have not had a chance to test it yet because I ordered it and then had to send the AP16 back to PA due to it not cocking. I'm hoping the weather will hold out today and I can see how well it quiets it.

Well, I'm happy to report the Huma Moderator, as short as it is, is just as quiet or quieter than the 0db Compact I originally had installed. I repositioned the red dot for not. I painted a couple dots on the rear sight and the top of the front sight so they are easier to see against a dark target. Once they have dried, I may reinstall them and see if I can get a decent zero with just the iron sights.
