Athlon Midas Tac - ranging @ 16x ??

Had a buddy express some interest in getting his own Hunter class field target setup. Starting from scratch; his only experience with airguns is shooting mine. As anyone reading this already knows, getting set up with all the gear needed for field target (especially PCP) is not an inexpensive endeavor.
He's pretty well set on what rifle he wants (Huntsman Revere). I'll keep him in air- can use my compressor any time, and use one of my tanks. Have spare sticks & stool he can use too. Recommended he wait on buying his own tank/bipod etc for now, in no rush for him to get them back to me. Better to put the cash toward his scope.

All that to get to this question- anyone using an Athlon Midas Tac (any version, but bonus points if it's a 6-24x50) in Hunter class? Are you happy with how it ranges by parallax compared to other scopes you've used? What focus wheel are you using?

Appreciate any & all experience you can provide.

Had one and returned it. Wonderful scope but the reticle was just too fine for me. In low light it was often lost shooting in a dark, tree shaded lane. How old is your buddy? Best to try before he buys. Uj
An SFP scope would be a better option for HFT. The reticle stays full size at all magifications. You may want to consider an Athlon Heras in one of the SFP models.

I have several athlon argos gen 2 6-24x50 ffp moa scopes and like them very much for ft. Have a couple element helix also but the crosshair is too fine at 16 but works fine at24 for target work. The athlon crosshair is about the same thickness at 16 as the element at 24. As far as ranging i think its ok but still a bit difficult at 50-55 but i think most scopes are. Personally i like the ffp

I did this write-up on my thoughts of the Midas Tac for field target a while back, in case you didn't see it. https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/athlon-midas-tac-for-field-target.1278955/

As for using it SPECIFICALLY for Hunter class, I've got less experience there, although me and my oldest son have had multiple sessions in the last week, both our guns with Midas's set up as described in the link, but on 16x. We've been shooting at all field target distances and both scopes have been ranging true and doing what they should.
50-55 is always tough at 16x, and is with the Midas Tac too, range a couple times though, letting eyes focus on something up close and then looking through the scope again, and we've both been able to arrive at the correct enough yardage to keep shots within a 1.5inch circle. He had 4 or 5 touching at 55 yards last night and was getting excited about how they kept dropping in nearly the same hole. I asked him what he'd ranged it at and it was 55, which was what the Midas on my gun had also ranged it at, and it's home range so I knew that to be true.

Me nor my son are finding the reticle too fine at 16x as others have said, of course that's a personal preference situation. I'd rather have fine than thick (bugs the heck out of me when the reticle is thicker than whatever I'm trying to see to shoot).

Thanks @Franklink, searched but somehow managed to miss that (excellent) write up. Just when you think something is idiot proof, here I come 😁.

@Solo1 @pesty3782 @Franklink - what are you using for the focus wheel? Pretty sure JD can make one for that model, just want to see what options are out there. Midas Tacs don't come with one, so that'll have to be factored into the price.

Would love to just recommend a Sightron SIII, Falcon X50 or the like, but hesitant to throw scopes in that price range at him, unless a used one pops up at a good price.

Gracias mis amigos!

Bought one of these used recently in 6-24x50 but have yet to mount it to a rifle or mess with it much (intended for a rifle I won't have for at least a few more weeks). So we were able to check out the reticle at 16x. Both agreed that while slightly thin at 16x, it was quite acceptable. It does wash out against dark backgrounds in the shadows, but no worse than the black reticles of a couple other scopes we used for comparison. For our eyes at least, illumination is the only real cure for that.
While not a concern for field target, I will say that at 12x it's getting too thin for my taste, & 10x or below my eyes were telling me "um, no".

May try to rig some sort of temporary wheel on the parallax knob to get a feel for ranging. Don't get me wrong, the endorsements in this thread do carry weight & are appreciated. Would just like to get a direct comparison with what I'm used to using, with full understanding that precise ranging at 16x from 45-55 yards is still something of a white whale.

Remember looking through the Midas when it first arrived & thinking the clarity is really good. After considerable time peering through it last night, I'd call it kinda... outstanding. We were both very impressed with image quality.
