Athlon Midas Tac vs Athlon Ares BTR

I have owned both. They are both nice scopes for the price. (I am ignoring the 5-25 because I have never used it and don’t understand the point of it in their pricing scale.)

The updates they both have been given the last couple years had given them both most of the same internals. Same glass and turrets now. They are very similar in size with both being 30mm tube and 50mm bell. Weight is about the same and the Ares is a bit shorter.

There are only a few difference that really separate them now. The mag range obviously 6-24 vs 4.5-27. The Midas focuses down to 10yds vs 25yds on the Ares. The Ares has illumination and the Midas does not. The Midas has a capped windage turret and less windage adjustment (which is still more than you will ever need).

Then Price... the Midas Tac is about $200, cheaper and that is often why it is the better buy unless you want the benefits of the Ares. On the used market the difference is less, but the Midas usually sells used for around $500 and can be had for around $525 new. The Ares is more like $750 new and can be had much less used, but many of them are the older model before the better turret upgrades of the current generation.

Like said above, both are very similar except the Ares has an IR, the new Gen 2 upgrades are noticeable. I recently purchased the Ares Gen 2 2.5-15x50 FFP APLR3 from CameraLand NY for 550....very nice glass and turrets have nice solid clicks.. MK Machining makes inexpensive side wheel and magnification lever for Athlons. The reticle is simple, not too busy.

I have the Midas Tac 4-16x44 and is by far my favorite scope I've owned. Just a fantastic scope for the money. I do have an Argos BTR Gen2 6-24x50 which for the money is great and that's on my .22lr but the Midas is a definite upgrade and rides on my EVOL. As a hunter I don't need the windage turret exposed so I like that. And illumination is not needed either for my shooting.

Dillon! Incredible Evol, Midas...and luv your AccuTac! Great 3 combo!

I returned both Ares after doing a side by side with the Alpha6 in strictly glass quality and kept the Midas TAC because it was cheaper than both of the Ares I returned which appeared to have the same glass.

I kept the Midas TAC specifically for trying out the CLICKING even if it's glass isn't as nice as the Alpha6 that doesn't have as nice clicks as the Midas TAC however its reticle ( FFP 6-24X50 ) is very hard to see on lower magnification in real world shooting conditions.

THE NEW H7 HAWKE FRONTIER appears to have slightly better glass than the Alpha6 so I would say it's the clearest Chinese scope money can buy today if clarity is important to you and IF the Alpha6 is simply too cheap to be believable and you have the cash for the NEW FRONTIER.

I haven't been wowed looking through any Chinese made scopes till I looked through the Alpha6 and the NEW HAWKE FRONTIER H7 and I looked through a lot of scopes that I returned due to their unacceptable glass.

The FFP Discovery HD 4-20x50 kinda wowed me too almost as much as the Alpha6 did but the other Discovery scopes costing more than that which I bought weren't as clear IDK WHY... THE 34MM HD 5-30X VERSION IS A REAL POS.

For whatever reason the TAC seems to have superior glass to me than the Ares, must be a slightly different glass prescription between them???!!! I've owned 5 Ares (three G1 and two G2) and a couple TAC's but have been behind 5 of them, and did side by sides. My friends like the TAC's more.

I like the .2 mil reticle in the Ares the most though which was the main reason I bought them and these have illume.

Best all around unsurpassed Chinese was the ETR but it's a more expensive scope as well as a heavier 34mm tube.

The new Cronus G2 is totally amazing for the money! I've already acquired two and hope to buy more as needed and as $ allows. These are going to be my go-to scopes if I can finagle it, just too nice to pass on for 20Y and farther.

Might have to try the new ETR 3-18 though which could sway me, we'll see???? They made the mil version reticle at .05 mil thick which IMO should have been .06 or .07 mil thick so I'm interested how it will look on 3-4x.

Which Athlon had the more pronounced yellow glass based on your eyes? The Midas TAC or the 30mm Ares or the 34mm Ares?

The 3-18x should naturally be clearer since it only maxes out at 18x. The glass looks very similar to the Bushnell Forge and my 3-18x is nicer than my 4.5-27x Forge. Not that they are nice because my cheaper Engage nor Nitro scopes don't have the yellowed glass the Forge does.

I don't see any yellowing, and none of my friends have said that about these either, so I don't know what to tell yuh. This is the TAC 6-24 sidebyside with the Ares 4.5-27.

All I know how to describe what we see in the TAC's is - superior IQ, or maybe even less grainy, or in other words I mean a more pleasing sight picture through the scope.

I've only looked through the 34mm TAC 5-25 in the ShotShow so I wouldn't be able to comment on this model without a sidebyside outdoors. I'm not buying one until they come out with the APRS6 reticle, nor any of the other TAC's. Cronus G2 it is for me.

Normally, and what we always do when we compare, is pick a magnification that both scopes have, 15x is a good place to compare 3-18's and 6-24's. Basically trying to get the exit pupil close to the same for the scopes being compared.

A good example is my March 5-42x56, on 15x it's brilliant and beautiful, though my S&B 5-25x56 is very nice except it doesn't have the POP that the March does at 15x. When on 25x the March has a very slight edge in resolution but it's hard to tell, and actually the IQ seems warmer in the S&B at 25X. I like a warmer IQ so I'll give the S&B the nod on 25x but without a doubt the March on 15x, well 20x too.

I recommend the TAC 6-24 often because it does most EVERYTHING well, except I prefer the .2 mil reticles, and want illume occasionally, but most people won't need or care about those things.

How is it that I can visibly see the yellow tint while some people can't?

Try doing a side by side with a Leupold VX3.

The 3-18 wasn't as pronounced compared to the 4.5-27x50.

My pictures I tried to take didn't come out any good when I did comparisons using my phone.

All eyes see things differently, right ??!!

As I've mentioned I hardly notice CA??? I can see it when someone posts a pic of "through the scope" but otherwise I don't notice it. So the scope would have to have an obvious amount of CA for it to annoy me. This has to be linked to types of coatings on the lenses and I think your eyes are sensitive to yellow???

I can see mirage but it TOO, has to be getting pretty obvious to annoy me. I actually want to see more mirage so I know what the wind is doing. Some scopes make mirage stand out more, why I have no idea???

Age probably has something to do with it too.

A mystery which will never be solved - why we see differently.

All's I can say is the Cronus 4.5-27x56 glass is HOLEY CRAP CLEAR!!!

There's an illumination issue though not consistant throughout it's reticle like only the upper right half is daytime visible.

Not worried about the Lifetime Warranty unless the close... (Like AEON and Nikon and Barra)

JUST The RETICLE ILLUMINATION on MINE is saying THIS-
