ATN X-Sight Comparison (by the numbers): X-Sight 5 vs. X-Sight 4K Pro

Below are some metrics comparing the X-Sight 5 and the X-Sight 4K Pro. I am curious to hear what conclusions others draw from comparing these metrics.

Summary:
- X-Sight 5 has 143.87% of the Sensor Resolution of the X-Sight 4K.
- X-Sight 5 has 133.33% of the Display Resolution of the X-Sight 4K.
- X-Sight 5 has 400% of the Recording Resolution of the X-Sight 4K.
- X-Sight 5 has 107.9% of the Pixel Density (Sensor-to-Display) of the X-Sight 4K.
- X-Sight 5 has 35.97% of the Pixel Density (Sensor-to-Video) of the X-Sight 4K.
- X-Sight 5 (3-15x) has 111.98% of the Field of View of the X-Sight 4K (3-14x).
- X-Sight 5 (5-25x) has 150.37% of the Field of View of the X-Sight 4K (5-20x).

Notes:
- 400% increase in Recording Resolution paired with a 35.97% increase in Pixel Density (Sensor-to-Video); which means MORE Recording Resolution from LESS Pixel Density.
- 111.98% (3-15x) and 150.37% (5-25x) increase in Field of View paired with a 107.9% increase in Pixel Density (Sensor-to-Display); which means MORE Field of View from LESS Pixel Density.

From my perspective it's a lot of hype and not a lot of performance! My 3rd X-Xight 5 is due to arrive today. I'm hoping 3's a charm, but not really expecting much of an improvement over the other 2. As far as resolution while looking through the scope, my 4K Pro has a much sharper, clerer picture! Both Gen 5's were very difficult to focus on a target because the resolution is so poor. This could very well be a firmware issue and may be resolved with a firmware update, but to date ATN has not released one, so I don't really expect the site picture to be any better one the one that's being delivered today.

I also had a miriad of issue with the other two. The first was the worst, the white crosshairs used to zero the scope did not even align with the reticle when entering the one shot zero function, making it it near impossible to zero the scope. You also had to zoom to above 10X or the increments in which the reticle moved at 5X was the equivilent of 10 clicks of the turret! No way to fine tune the zero! I was never able to even record a video on theat one because it would lock up when the record function was activated.

The second was better, but not by much. It still had the low resolution sight picture making it very difficult to focus. I was able to zero this one and did 3 different recordings at the 3 different resolutions. But, audio was only captured on the 2K resolution recording, not the 1440 or 4K. RAV didn't work on the 1st or 2nd, it wouldn't even go into calibration mode. Something else that's not real clear on their website is the fact the 240 FPS record speed only works in RAV! Sincce I could never get it to work, I was unable to determine what resolution is used to record at this speed.

Since I'm shooting PCP's RAV would brobably be hit or miss anyway, so they really need to make the 240 FPS recording available as another regular recording option. On my 4K Pro, the RAV does work with some of my PCP's, but not all, so I know they are capable of having it work on a PCP. They have yet to release the App for the Gen 5. The Obsidian 4 app will not work, so as of now, there is no way to stream video over wifi as claimed.

If you haven't seen it, here is a thread I started a while ago that pretty much captures my Gen 5 experience: https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/atn-x-sight-5.1289417/

It's really sad they released this before it was ready for the average consumer. Still too many functions not working and too many bugs in the ones that do. If the scope that is due to rrive today does not fix the majority of the major issues (resolution, audion while recording and RAV) I'll be sending it back for a refund and will wait until they are available as a refurb! My 5-20X 4K Pro is a refurb and I've not had any problems with it. At least the refurbs are gone over to ensure they work before they are sent to the consumer!

If anyone has had better luck with one of these new Gen 5 scopes, I love to hear about it, thus far I've not been impressed at all...

@FLgunner - Thank you for taking the time to respond, appreciate it. Your initial thread is what prompted me to start compiling the metrics above in hopes of finding explanations for the issues early adopters like you were experiencing. I am starting to believe at least some of the X-Sight 5 issues being reported by early adopter customers can be explained by the metrics above.

For example, your commentary about the X-Sight 4K Pro appearing much sharper than the X-Sight 5 makes sense when considering the relatively small increase in pixel density (7.9%) compared to the relatively large increases in sensor resolution (43.87%) and display resolution (33.33%), particularly as magnification increases.

Along the same line, given the difference in magnification power between the 3-15x and 5-25x models of the X-Sight 5, I suspect pixel density issues (i.e. display clarity, recorded video quality, zoom functionality, etc) will be more prevalent amongst customers with the 5-25x model than with the 3-15x model.

On that note, I am curious if anyone else draws any other conclusions from the metrics.

I see what you are saying and you have me wondering if I should have gone for the 3-15X model. I also have a 3-14X 4K Pro I had before getting the refurbished 5-20X 4K Pro. I went with the higher zoom based on my experience with using the two 4K Pro models. I do pest at night and typically shoot at 50 yards. I have found setting the zoom about midway gives the best combination of zoom/resolution, so with the 3-14X I was shooting at 7X and with the 5-20X I'm using 10X zoom. Obviously, shooting rats at 50 yards, more zoom is better for seeing the results, so the 5-20X gives me better resolution video than the 3-14X scope does, but mostly because the rat fills the view finder more at 10X on the 5-20X than it does at 7X one the 3-14X. Based on this experience, I chose to get the 5-25X scope this go round, but maybe I'd be better off with the 3-15X model...

I also don't think the currently shipping Gen 5 scopes are configured correctly, because even with no zoom at all, the view through the scope is far superior on both my 4K Pro scopes. I feel this will eventually get corrected with a firmware update, it's just a shame they doen't check/correct these things before shipping them to the consumer! Now, if they wanted to pay me to be a beta tester, I might change my view... :p

I'll report back later after the latest replacement arrives and I have a chance to test it out.

#3 arrived this afternoon! It's better than the last two, but it still has issues! Here's the post with videos I just posted to my other thread:

Bottom line, the internal screen resolution is the best yet, which allowed me to focus a bit better, so these videos look much clearer the the previous [posted in the same thread].

RAV still won't go into calibrate more, so it can't be used with a PCP, rendering the ability to record at 240 FPS impossible! This is really disappointing because this is one of the main reasons I wanted this scope! It's still not recording audio in the 1440p and 4K resolutions. The firmware version is still the same as the last scope, so this isn't real surprising...
