Atomic XR initial setup... and sight in

Decided to sight in using the JSB Exact Jumbo 18s. Shot these two groups after work on Friday after putting on the WHT 3-12x44 FFP SFIR compact scope. Bipod front, fist rear. The IR on this scope is brighter on level one than my Helos BTR on level 6.

Then I shot it today at 40 yards at this Shoot and See target, the wind was blowing from all directions. I pinned the target upside down, as it had been shot at previously at 50 yards with another gun. I was repurposing the target. The first group on left, four JSB Exact Jumbo 18s into one cluster, and that flyer to the left. The second lower group AA Diabolo Field 16s, the wind was unkind today. I hope to do better as the conditions improve.

@L-Leon Group 2 looks good. Man that’s a compact little scope. How does the weight feel? Clarity of glass in shaded and low light areas? Is that a Donny moderator on there?

Forgot to add that on the 40 yard groups I used +1/2 .mil of holdover for the 18s and held dead center for the 16s.

@ezana4ce, the clarity of the glass in low light areas is excellent. It weighs 18 ounces and is sweetly compact at 9.6" the IR is daylight visible and plenty for situations that call for it. The reticle can be difficult to see at 3x, but turn on that IR and there it is. The moderator is a DonnyFl Tanto. I took five sparrows with the Atomic yesterday all at 30 yards. So far I am very pleased with the scope. Now I need to come up with a single point sling and attachment for the Atomic so I can sling it aside.

@L-Leon Sounds like a candidate for a squirrel hunting scope. I figured it was a Tanto or Tatsu moderator, but I don’t recognize the shape of the front end. What’s screwed onto the front of the moderator?

That's a small zip tie with a piece of yarn as a wind indicator. Best accessory I never purchased, won't shoot without one attached.

@L-Leon I meant on the very end beyond the zip tie. It has the look of the top of a lego, like battlements on a castle tower. Mine looks flush when viewing photos showing the profile. Did you add something to it or did it come that way?

@ratzilla, I'm going to do side by side pics with the Bantam Sniper HR. It really is a nice compact setup that's easy to walkabout with. Still carrying approximately 8 FPE at 50 yards with Crosman Premier Domes. Plenty for the small pests I go after, for woodchucks?, I'll just stalk closer to 35 yards max or pass on the shot.

L.Leon, you definitely picked the right scope. My Veyron’s reticle lighting is so poor that it is useless, only the center dot lights, and isn’t worth the cost, extra knob and weight. Very disappointing indeed, I do like the scope, other than that. Mine is 6-24 ffp.

I agree with all these comments - looks like you’re on the way to a nice woods walker. I don't have that luxury here where I live so I punch holes in paper. I like the looks of your setup. I'm thinking of trying mine with the stock, but we'll see.

@scotty1, the IR on this one is bright, like I said brighter at level 1 than my Helos BTR on level 6, and no blooming. I did buy the scope, but fellow forum members helped with the decision. I gave them their props for helping me out. I will post further impressions on this scope as I increase its usage.

@rsfrid, I would encourage you to try it as a mini carbine, even if briefly. The handling is sweet and you can dial it down via the TP and still shoot those pistol distances. And if you don't like it? You can switch it back. Your groups at the range with your Atomic in pistol form were really good. Just for fun try the same pellets with the same tune, but in mini carbine mode. As soon as the weather allows, I will run some strings along all three TP settings. Currently sighted in for the JSBs at 25 yards, using the highest setting on the TP. I get the same POI at 25 yards with the Crosman Premier Domes at the middle TP setting. In this instance sighting in with the heavier pellet helps me achieve the same POI by simply dialing down the TP for the lighter pellet.

@l.leon well that gun and scope combo looks balanced. I did like my Veyron 3x12 not sure what to put on the next gun, but yours looks like a candidate.

@blackpaw, then definitely check this one out if you liked your Veyron. The IR is great, daylight bright and makes the reticle very useable even at 3x. Check out this post by @casino7095, he does a short video review. I'm really liking this scope for my intended use, sub 50 yard pesting and plinking with some group shooting for fun.

@dairyboy, thanks. I'm wondering what a person, such as yourself who's owned a lot of PCPs. Would think of the Atomic if they handled and used one. Definitely a little workhorse for in and outdoor pesting.

I think that would be a great little gun. I prefer compact guns and have been enjoying lower powered guns as well. So I'm sure id enjoy it and seeing how robust it is on Dana's series big plus there. For the price it's alittle steep for me, not saying not worth it, but for what I'd use it for it's too much for me.
