Other Automatic Transmission fluid to lubricate main spring

Take it from an auto mechanic of 15years... you don't want trans fluid anywhere near you. That stuff stinks even when brand new.
I've worked on cars all my life, it's an aquired smell, but I've come to enjoy it in a similar way to Hoppes solvent or perhaps like dogs rolling in their own you know what LOL. To me it smells better than FP10 lube. Now that I have my rifle apart I might as well do it the right way, but I still think the Mobil tranny fluid is as good as what RWS/ Umarex sells as spring oil:)

You have a stronger nose than I do lol. I dont mind most odors but trans fluid... hard pass 😄

I watch POWERNATION and they use some blue colored liquid lube on the camshaft when installing it, I wonder if Umarex just repackages whatever the POWERNATION guys use ? LOL

I just completely disassembled my model 34 as per the instructions given to me here and the piston seal is torn at one edge a little, it's the original seal 23 years old so I'm shocked it's in as good of condition as it is. I'm going to order a Vortek piston seal and follow the advice here and use the grease they sell. I still think automatic tranny fluid will work though🤓
Your gun Buddy, use what you want, no reason to argue about why it should work.

My 34 is 23 years old and it works just like it did when I bought it, when is the oil supposed to cause problems?
Not to discount experience but my grandmother has been driving 60 years and never had an accident. You couldn't pay me enough to get in a car with her now. Just because someone luck has been on someone's side for years doesn't mean it it the best way to do things. Do as you please.

Here's the thing about this post which I'm suprised hasn't been brought up yet. You actually don't NEED lube for a main spring. You can run the spring dry and it will last for a very long time. There are some benefits though on certain guns.

Loose guides? Thick grease will dampen the vibration.

Humid environment? Nearly ANY oil will prevent rust.

Thats it. At least thats all I can think of. When a spring compresses, especially on factory guides, its larger than the guide. When it *violently* decompresses, a dry, loose guide isn't slowing the spring down a whole lot.

Most people, myself included, swap steel guides out for Derlin guides anyway. Derlin guides are basically self lubricating.

Now with all that being said, I'm still standing firm that trans fluid, or an liquidy fluid for that matter, is not the best choice. It's going to drip down and all over the place while shooting and sitting. Grease will adhere better.

It doesn't drip if you use it properly, it's not like I'm suggesting you open the cap and pour it in LOL
