Air Venturi Avenge x .177 suddenly shoots innacurately

I know - I have already tried a lot of different pellet types, and the crossmans just worked fine up until recently

The pellet can change just as much as the gun, you really need a chronograph to determine if its the former or latter. Scrubbing the barrel with a brass brush likely won't improve things to your satisfaction anymore than your previous attempts at cleaning has...

Have your point of impact suddenly dropped a little ?
You could have a blown breech O-ring that would result in lower speeds, and so probably a less accurate speed.
A blown breech O-ring will usually mean that when you shoot the rifle you will feel a puf of air at / around the magazine.

Bad pellets also a option, my friend got 3 tins last month ( H&N barracuda ) he shot 1 of them no problem, but the 2 other tins are just worthless due to imperfections on the pellets. ( this on 30 M he shoot with his cheapo China rifle, that normally are like a laser on that modest distance )

Where is that oring placed? The probe orings are fine it seems

The O-ring is just inside the breech where you feed in the pellet / slug, it is what stop air from blowing out the back, so it seal around the probe that push the pellet forward into the chamber.

If it is blown you will for sure feel a puf of air there shooting a shot ( with a pellet or slug of course, a blank shot might not have much leak backwards with a blown breech O-ring )

PS not familiar with these rifles, i do know some actually have the breech O-ring on the probe, but the norm i think it is is just inside the breech a few mm inside

Hi - sorry for my noob approach to this awesome sport. The problem is that my AvengeX is suddenly very innacurate. Sometimes it groups just fine (1,5 cm/22m) and sometimes it is all over the target plate. I havent dropped the gun or the scope. The scope is level. I use a bench rest to hold the gun. I have cleaned the barrel with a pull-cord with aerosol on. Havent oiled it after. That didnt help. The gun seems tight on all screws. The scope is a Hawke and the baffle-thing in the front fits the barrel nicely. What could be wrong? Today I shot around 80 pellets without getting it to shoot in a consistent way. Looking forward to hear from you:)
Check the regulator gage? See what it's reading and take a couple of shots to see if it's workijg correctly and not sticking. Did you ever double load ot and possibly clip the moderator?

I think the Avenge X has a pin probe like my Avenger. So the O-rings are easily visible and not in the breach of the barrel.

I agree with Matt entirely about a chronograph. I used to have a "Shooting Chrony" but shot it one too many times. Now I use a cheap chinese chronograph and they work great. No excuse not to have one when they cost about what a tin or two of pellets cost. It would tell you quickly if something changed in the tune of the gun which could be your issue.

If you changed tins of Crosmans that could also easily be the issue. I have had zero issues with H&N changing tin to tin but I got two horrible tins of Crosman 10.5s after a tin that shot great. I've shot dozens of tins of H&N without a similar issue. In several of my guns they shoot better than any of the brands Matt suggested. If you already have H&Ns or any other brand that previously shot at least decently I see no reason you should not try them to see if it helps.

But if you did not switch tins of Crosmans I would invest in a bronze brush like Scott suggested and a chronograph. You can even get a boroscope for less than $100 these days from Alliexpress. I would buy a chronograph regardless. Bronze is a lot softer than steel but you will have to be careful to not let the cleaning rod rub the bore if you use it from the muzzle. If you can get the bolt out of the way it is better to clean from the breach. A perhaps safer option might be to use some JB's on a patch. You would want to do this something like 10 times or more. JB's is an abrasive paste. If you use it a lot it will change the size of your bore a little. I've used it on several guns without ill effect, however. The JBs will polish the whole bore but lead is much softer than even bronze so it will be the most affected.

My rings sit on the probe🙃

I dont know, Clip the moderator? The regulator creeps down from 2000psi to 1800 psi. Then if I let the gun sit the reg rises to 2000 psi again. I guess I have to buy a chronograph

Thank you. What kind of cheap chinese chronograph should I get then?

Hi MaxGasMekl.
Where do you live in denmark?

I guess you lost some speed somehow - Pressure drop or something.
Did you try to remove the shroud to check if the centering plastic parts is still in in the right place?
When you shoot is the sound still the same. Mine was falling apart after the first couple of hundred shots.
The bolts holding the Alu block together with the rear metal parts was coming loose and it leaked air and pellet speed dropped.

Hej Claus - på Møn:) It sounds the same, and I havent had any pressure drop. I guess… maybe I can give you a call someday so we can discuss

I also own an avenge-x and had this same issue with my .22. It was accurate and then after a thousand or so shots the groups widened and were moving everywhere. Here's what fixed it for me:

Try depressurizing and take out the regulator. Be sure to take a pic of the regulator's washers and note down the orientation of them. Check the o-rings. Make sure they are pliable and not flat and hard. If you take them out and they crumble, they are bad and need replacing. Mine crumbled when I ended up carefully cutting them apart to remove them.

Clean everything up with some silicone oil, dry everything off, apply small amounts of silicone grease to the washers and o-rings, assemble and put back together.

I only thought of this after going over my chrono and seeing the shot spread was super wide so definitely get a chrono.

Sounds like I should try and take it apart. Im not very used to taking guns apart so do I need to do it in a specific order or anything?

How do I remove the shroud? It should be easy just to turn it by hand but mine is very tight

You'll need to depressurize and take the stock off first before taking out the regulator. Other than that, Air Venturi has some guides on the rifle on youtube but for the regulator it's just unscrewing a black screw that will keep the regulator from being fully unscrewed when adjusting, then unscrewing the regulator fully. Just be thoughtful, slow, and not force anything.

Ok, but why should I try the bronze brush? Doesnt it just scratch the inside of the bore?
I got a gun when it starts shooting left it's clean the barrel time .. it's sure a tell with it ..

Bronze should be wayyyy softer then barrels steel so the battle will water the brush out ..lol

I use well oiled steel wool for a few pulls then follow up with a patch .

I used well oiled scotch Brite for a few pulls as well just 2 or 4 to loosen up hardened gunk not more ..

Now use to get brass , bronze , copper wools to clean with but it's now a mail-order only so I use soft/ fine steel wool

https://www.amazon.com/bronze-wool/s?k=bronze+wool

No need to be scared of using stuff just dot get silly using it 😉.

A couple of question from me.

Are you shooting the same tin of pellets?
Is the rifle set to the same setting each time (High/Low, regulator pressure and tank pressure)
Any changes in the hammer spring?
Have you checked to barrel mounting screws (you have to take the scope off)?
Have you bumped the barrel at all?
