"B" Rifle stock refinish ( iAMzehTOASTY1 )

First try at a stock refinish!😅🥴🫣🤗
I didnt.mind the color. It was the slippery feel in my hands(many layers.of...paint, lacquer?)🤷‍♂️😅
Anywhooose...
Sanded back to the wood(in most areas)*found some damage(repairs in the wood?) but I'm not concerned about it.
Then cleaned off with a damp cloth.
One coat of Birchwood Casey brand: Tru-Oil rubbed in for a few minutes and then set to dry.

What it was looking like

It's weird🤔 the wood "wants to stick" to my hands now. Also not as shiny but I like that it shows the "scars" that were hidden underneath; it and I share a common bond😶‍🌫️🎩🤙

Multiple coats of Tru-oil will make it shinny. Lightly hit with 500 paper or 000 steel wool every two coats.
Wait until thoroughly dry or will be tacky.

Any scars that haven't been completely sanded out will reappear once the finish is applied. I usually sand down stocks to 80 or 100 grit to remove imperfections, and then go to 150, 220 and 400 ... but I'm anal too  .

Thanks! This was just something for me to do really😅 it's dried enough now that the tackiness is gone. Just gunna leave her at that for now and take her out tomorrow for field tests. It's a pass me down so the scars get to stay🤩
Prolly end up putting some more coats of oil on it eventually. Or.something lol idk yet. I did kind of finesse the grip to a more " my hand" fit by sanding a bit more here and there. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome🤪🤙

when I re-finish a stock it's mandatory to sand the pistol grip to my liking - if necessary .... just cover any checkering or stippling with masking tape.

Only use a small amount at a time and rub that dry. (It will still be a little tacky if you tried to hold it) Blend the next section into the last. Then hang that up a while to dry. I do the forearm to the pistol grip only. When that's not tacky hold that end and do the butt end. It will blend in as you rub it dry. Do a couple coats and don't sand. You want the finish on the gun. Not the floor. Block it out with 400 when you think you have enough finish on it. Then hand rub 2 more coats. Gives you a good job easy with only a little bit of pores showing. There's a lot of ways to fill the pores if you want them all filled. But I like to still see some. It's wood.
It's not hard to recut checkers. I can tell you how to make your own tools easy. Heat red and curve the tip of a 3 corner and a square needle file and use those to chase them out. Curve the ends like a riffler file. Easy if you're patient and careful.
Tru oil can be pretty good once you learn the rubbed dry part. Top gun is Minwax Antique oil. The shiny Stingray is Tru oil. Antique oil is super easy to use and do a sanded in finish. Satin

Glad to see you're having some fun. I took a cheapie stock once and used a torch to bring out grain on it before finishing. Was interesting. Have done similar with other wood working projects before as well.
You can do things as practice on and have some fun wothout that oh my gosh , oops if it were high end ..

We went on our maiden voyage!🤪🤙
🤯what theeeeeee...
Ok so....idk what's going on under the hood😅
But this thing but ALL of my other slIngers(of the 6 that i took with me)to SHAME!
Like....shame, shame!!!
At first I had my ruger scope on it, 2 shots and she popped it off into the sand😑🤷‍♂️ oh well. So I went iron sights on her! And...oh...lordy did she preform!🤩😱💥
She is no prom queen, but she was the ONLY slinger today to hit 100yards WITH 25+mph crosswind/gusts over 45mph.
