Back when we had cool/dangerous toys

I can’t possibly be the only one mowed down bottles with one of these…

I’d ride my bike to the store and buy cans of freon for under a buck. The can would cover in frost like a flagpole. I put a ski sock over it. Sold it to a little kid down the street after a couple months.
I also had one of these. My dad told me it was dumb and I’d be disappointed. But I was persistent until he said ok dummy. When I‘d go full beans with it the thing would glaze over with frost. I was the cool guy for a very short time. I do believe my dad sent it back before I got some kind of Freon cancer.

I had rigged up a plastic bottle that enclosed the freon cannister on mine and I would fill it with hot water so as to slow down the freezing process. I remember it improved things, but the cannisters freezing was always a problem.

The other problem with them was their abysmal build quality. They really felt like the cheapest of plastic Hasbro toys and the barrel really resembled a section of a telescoping antenna.

When I opened the box my dad wouldn’t let me try it until he did. We went to the hardware store and got Freon. He said stand back just in case she blows. He wanted to send it back immediately because it was made of plastic. Nothing was plastic with airguns back then.

When I received mine I had been anticipating the BB firing equivalent of an M60 machinegun, so when I opened the box it came in and saw how lightweight and cheap it was I was pretty disappointed. It would spray BB's like a hose until it iced up though and my parents didn't have any objections to it. I believe the clamshell yoke that held the freon can eventually cracked and that was the end of it. There have been some much better BB machineguns made since then, most of which are still available today, so this is one instance where I don't feel any nostalgia for the good old days.
