Back Yard Nutria Rat Hunting Adventures

Looks like lots of fun for that style of hunting. Good shooting on swimming target also.

Thanks Monkyshine! It is fun indeed. I had to take these shots unsupported which I prefer not doing with this rig due to weight and balance. I usually get down in the prone but this is not always a possibility. Prone for me = better shot = better video :)

hi Chris, nice shot and nice share,, it is very enjoyable for shot during at night with clear vision. pretty admire this happy time. By the way, may i know that is your pallet weight and speed?

Hi unlimithunter! I'm very glad that you enjoyed my video. I have numerous more in this thread as well as on YouTube in case you haven't already seen them. I'm shooting JSB Match Diabolo Exact King MKII Heavy .25 Cal (33.95 gr) at around 907 fps which works out to about 62 ft.lbs. at the muzzle.

Cheers

Lol, yep. Another one bites the dust!

I've shot two... one with an Air Arms S400 .177 in the back of the head, it just rotated and floated face down. The second I got with my Marlin 30/30 and the only thing left was an oil slick.

Having only shot two I wonder if they float back to the surface?

BTW, I love your videos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Johnny. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy my videos.

To answer your question, yes, they typically float. I'm my experience, if they didn't float, they probably got away. Usually the next day they bloat up and really float. Something in my lake eats the floaters. I haven't been able to tell if it's fish or turtles. But we do have alligator gar, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's what eats them.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Man you really got me going on the nutria thing. The park / lake nutria in my neighborhood are a definite NO-GO but there are plenty of them in this area.

The planets need to be aligned perfectly to find a target in an area where it's OK to shoot and that means internet research and knocking on doors. Internet is easy but driving onto people's property is awkward but rewarding. Farmers / agricultural people are easy to talk to!!!

Floaters, hmmm. Alligator gar and turtles eating the floaters in your pond sound totally logical. Sorry it took so long and I'll subscribe now.

Shooting nutria has become one of my favorite hobbies these days. I had a slow year last year. I think it was because at the very beginning of the season I shot 2 pair (4 rats). I believe they were mated pairs which means I ruined my chances for little offspring targets.

I have to be extremely careful when I shoot. I have to pass on shots all the time because I'm not comfortable with the back stop or shooting direction. I rarely take water shots too for the same reason even though I know I can pull it off when my scope is properly sighted in.

I think most of my neighbors are fine with me doing what I do because we all share a mutual hatred for these rats and what they are doing to our property.

Great shooting and video! Don’t think you need a different gun....first shots were a little low, might have removed it’s lower jaw! Excellent follow up shots.

Thank you. I'll take any kind of kill I can get on these things. I do prefer dropping them with one shot but these guys are tough. Would just like to make a few upgrades to my existing rig. I'd love to set it up for .30 hybrid slugs, but debating a few other options.

You're welcome! Hunting or pesting especially at night is tough....I know we try our best for humane kills but sometimes they move when the trigger is pulled, maybe a flier...many variables. I shot the biggest rat in my back yard a few days ago, had a bead on his heart broadside...he moved forward a bit the same time I pulled the trigger...thought I got him mid body as he scurried off the bait station and under a tree....thought he was going to die where I couldn't find him...nope he was under the tree shot in the heart...whew! We try our best doesn't always work out as planned! Good job!
