Back Yard Nutria Rat Hunting Adventures

Wow nice shoot what state are you in I need to go hunt these things (do not worry you do not need to tell me about your spot) I am assuming you are in Florida?

Lol, thanks. I'm in Louisiana. But yes they do live in parts of Florida as well. Fish and Game has a bounty on them here. They are a nasty invasive species.

I love hunting those things they are tuff little buggers , head shots they are DRT all you see is the top of the body showing . Going out this week to give it a try at night . You definitely have a honey hole . I find it very hard when they are swimming as you know , because there is only about a 1"to 11/2" of the head showing out of the water . I like it better when they are swimming away from me that's the perfect shot . Nice shootun wish I had that spot keep it coming Darell Btw have you tried slugs it that thing yet ?

I've only seen a couple in WA, but I know we have them. I want to plan on going on a night hunt for them too, probably with my R5 30 long, Pard NV007, and 60-62gr slugs

I found this for nutria proliferation. Good luck on your hunt!

There in Kansas and have been for at least 20-25yrs.

Great shooting and video! Don’t think you need a different gun....first shots were a little low, might have removed it’s lower jaw! Excellent follow up shots.

Thank you. I'll take any kind of kill I can get on these things. I do prefer dropping them with one shot but these guys are tough. Would just like to make a few upgrades to my existing rig. I'd love to set it up for .30 hybrid slugs, but debating a few other options.

You're welcome! Hunting or pesting especially at night is tough....I know we try our best for humane kills but sometimes they move when the trigger is pulled, maybe a flier...many variables. I shot the biggest rat in my back yard a few days ago, had a bead on his heart broadside...he moved forward a bit the same time I pulled the trigger...thought I got him mid body as he scurried off the bait station and under a tree....thought he was going to die where I couldn't find him...nope he was under the tree shot in the heart...whew! We try our best doesn't always work out as planned! Good job!

Yeah, night time hunting certainly brings its unique challenges, but it sure is fun. Happy hunting!

Very nice shots and video. They sure can move faster than one would think!

Lol, thank you. It was early, barely light, probably could have gone without night mode on the scope, but I honestly forgot. Video turned out pretty good anyway. Yeah, they can move pretty quick when they get hit. Sometimes looks like they walk on water.

I really think you need to try the FX Hybrid slugs, even in 25cal, they will carry more energy downrange which is what you're after, and they double in size on impact along with the hydrostatic shock they inflict. Another good choice might be the NSA 38.5 grain slugs, they hit hard out of my Rainstorm 2.

traker1955, thanks for your input. I've been putting a lot of thought into the hybrid slugs.

Seems like one of the original selling points was that you could use the pellet liner. But then they made a different liner that shot them better.

Anyway, I figure I'm going to have to get a new liner whether I go with hybrid slugs or slugs. And if I'm getting a new liner, I think I will probably go ahead and increase my caliber also.

I really think I would like to be shooting .30cal hybrid slugs. They are 44.5 grains. My only concern with increasing caliber is increasing the loudness of my gun. I plan to upgrade my moderator which would help, but still not sure where that will put me from a loudness standpoint compared to where it is now.

I love my .30 cals. 45-55 yds usually. I set up on farm ponds. Pest removal for free I provide. Just removed two beaver last month on a tree farm. I wish I had these PCP's when I lived in the South Louisiana swamps as a kid.

Lol, yeah this is my first PCP. I wish I had adapted years ago also. What is your FPE? Sorry for all the questions. I had been considering doing a few upgrades to my Mk2 (caliber change, plenum, power pack), but now that the Mk3 is out I think I'm just going to go that route. It is less out of pocket expense for me to sell my Mk2 and buy a Mk3 than it is to upgrade my Mk2. Plus I will end up with more power with the Mk3. So basically, I'm trying to decide between .25 cal with hybrid slugs, .25 cal with slugs, or .30 cal with hybrid slugs out of a Mk3.
