BAGA Field Target Match report September 17, 2016 in Bristol, WI

BAGA Field Target Match 09/17/2016
Hello Everyone,
So we hosted our September field target match Saturday 09/17/2016 and it was an awesome event!!! We had 16 shooters show up to compete on a wonderful day in S/E Wisconsin. We also had somewhere between 8-10 spectators show up to see what we are doing back in the woods. Bill Howarth made an appearance for the first time in 10 years! Bill is doing quite well and hopes to make a return to match shooting here at BAGA next season. We look forward to seeing Bill more over the winter as well as he stated he loves the winter IFP league we hold and wants to participate in that so we are going to see much more of Bill!!!! How cool is that?!?! Freaking AWESOME!!!!

The course was set up with 16 lanes, 2 targets per lane, 2 shots per target for 64 shots at 40 troyer. I have 5 targets that are over 60t on this course and the scores from Greg Sauve do not really convey the level of difficulty that this course presents. It was about 80 degrees with sunny skies, with variable winds from 2-15 mph but our course is heavily wooded so some winds do not make it down into the course. We did have some breezes down on the lanes today, however it was not nearly enough to toss Greg a curve ball and mess him up. I have a 3/8” KZ(BAGA Cobra) out at 25 yards and it does not faze him! This is the first time in 20 years the BAGA course has been cleaned. Greg was able to hold his immense level of concentration through this whole match and clean the course. This is a feat not easy to understand unless you have shot a BAGA field target match. One of the replies on Greg’s post on Facebook was “BAGA cleaned, Inconceviable”. We have had 2 others come close this year with Vlad shooting 62/64 and 63/64, and Boomer shooting 62/64 but nobody has cleaned it until “The Immortal” Greg Sauve did today. For those unaware, Greg has silently marked 2016 “the year of Sauve” without speaking a single word. His actions have deemed him worthy of this title. Greg won the Crosman match this year by a few shots over Boomer. Greg has recently won the World Senior title in Portugal for his 4th World Senior title. Then a couple of weeks after that Greg won the Pyramyd Air Cup overall high score to win that event. Then one week later Greg shows up at BAGA for his first match at BAGA this year and cleans the course. Greg is on a complete tear and showing absolute mastery on the lanes this year no matter what venue he is visiting in multiple states and countries!!!! I have contacted Nancy Kerrigan’s body guard to assist me at our next match together.

Congrats Greg!!!!! You truly deserve it!!!

Ok and on with the rest of the match after well deserved congrats!

Out of the 16 shooters, we had one brand new shooter. John Newcomb showed up to see what BAGA is doing and decided to shoot our club loaner gun to see what he could do. The loaner is a Marauder in .177 that was donated to the club and Phil Eakley took it home and set up for hunter by donating a scope and cleaning the rig up and building the range card. John ended up shooting a 26/64 on this course for his first match ever, earning him a “New Shooter” award certificate. Dave Blakeslee from the Maribel Sportsman Club in Manitowoc, Wi made a guest appearance to see what our course was like. Dave is building a new airgun club at Maribel and has asked BAGA for some pointers on how things work and run and we were more than happy to chime in as asked. Dave brought his .22 Marauder and sticks to give the BAGA course a shot. Dave ended up with 27/64 for a good showing on this course, congrats! We look forward to seeing more of John and Dave, they are welcomed back with open arms.

We also had Tony Roman and Bill Dickerson drive from over 2 hours north of us to attend another BAGA match. Thanks for coming out Guys! It is more appreciated than we can tell you.

We did have 3 shooters in WFTF, but I decided to lump all Open and WFTF together for overall scores. If we get 4 people in WFTF, I will award WFTF and Open separately but for this match I combined them.

Overall this was an excellent match at BAGA. Largest attendance this year by far and largest shooter count this year as well so we are doing good things and people are responding by coming out to see what is new. Next match is going to get a little harder. I plan to make some adjustments and lengthen the course a little more than it is now. Our October match will be held on 10/15 and I will probably creep up the difficulty factor for the final match of the year. Since it is the last match of the season, I can push things out and not have to rebuild the course before the next match. We will tear the course down after our October match and then we will head indoors on 11/05. Our indoor league will start in December or January and go through May when we head back outdoor again. Just like a field target match day, each league day, Ron and Bill will Chef us up some awesome grub and everyone will enjoy a great day of shooting 30 yards indoors with friends and break bread to commemorate the day.
