Baiting station without tools

So I'm not a tool guy/craftsman, I'm an office fella. Lefty-loosey righty-tighty was a revelation in consciousness for me. The only tools I have access to, I don't, as I am the caretaker for a widow overrun by ground and tree squirrels who got elder abused (the lady, not the squirrels) by having all her tools stolen. Well, except for my own drill and impact driver, which I'm barely smart enough even to know how to plug in. Anyway, I can hardly ever leave the house for a moment and it would be easier to have a bait station than check the windows constantly for a 1 in 100 chance on range and positioning.

Amazon stuff is junk, meant to feed squirrels but not take pellet abuse or position them right etc. Even google tries to deny good results, though everyone's thrilled to tell you about poisons.

Without tools or much of them, what would you do to get a good bait station? Link(s) for U.S.A. buyable one(s) you like? Plans for Dummies 101? Is this something I should bother trying to hire out somehow?

You don’t need a “bait station”. You just need to throw some nuts on the ground in front of a rock or tree and you are done. You put a plastic cup with easy flip open lid if the birds are stealing all the nuts. Or some old junk you have in your garage and put it buy the fence or tree as back drop. or find a spot on the tree with a good back stop. You only need bait and a back stop at the end of the day!

If you willing to get a saw and some boards then easy to build a L shaped platform with some nuts In a cup. This way make it easy to reposition the bait station easily, you still will need a bigger back stop.

The thing is, squirrels are not our only visitor. We have three flocks of turkeys here, from 6 to 14 per flock. The last three days they woke me early in the morning squabbling, and today all three flocks were here at once, for almost 30 turkeys. They eat up all the seed left on the ground, and they do it earlier than the squirrels wake up and later than they hang around, so if I scatter bait I just wind up feeding turkeys. The squirrels don't even get involved. Even the deer get into snuffling along the ground and eating up whatever we provide that is either right there or gets spilled from up high from the bird feeders. I need something high enough off the ground that turkeys don't bother, maybe even deer but they're not the main problem and we see them less. But we get swarmed by turkey every day.

I do appreciate your feedback, but our situation here demands a raised feeder.

Anyone who wants to post their version of a bait station that's off the ground enough to keep turkeys looking elsewhere, please chime in. But on the ground, we got trouble to spare and that just won't work for us.

Here's a very simple one I made out of junk/scrap materials last year for some occasional shots from my kitchen window. Plywood backing (2 layers in the kill zone) mounted on top of a thin board for the squirrels to sit on. Empty can about 9 or 10" tall screwed to it that has about 3/4" holes cut out on each side so the squirrels can pick out the feed. Whole contraption was then mounted on an old deck umbrella stand. Some bits on each side to allow the squirrels access up to it. Works great and was basically free. Probably should have stained the wood, though. Wasn't planning on keeping it around this long at the time...but it works so well, it's not going anywhere.

the top picture is the top with two screws on each side, just unscrew the 4 screws lift the top off put fresh corncob with Nutella spread,😋just a bunch of scrap wood slapped together.Hell you can probably just throw a pallet down and put the bait in it somewhere.Good luck

For it to be raised you will likely have to use tools in one way or another unless you just sit it on top of something like a high chair or a table or tree stump, etc. For an almost no tool setup I can recommend this: Find two square or rectangular containers of different sizes. They should have same geometry as you will fit one inside the other. There should be a nice gap between them when set flush on the surface. Put a piece of wood like a 2x6 in the bottom of the large one. Insert the smaller one an fill the side gaps with wood or with rubber mulch. Use Duct Tape to seal the gap and make it into a single unit. Place with the open side facing your shooting location, place a handful of treats inside and wait. May be able to do same thing with buckets, but will need to stabilize so it doesn't roll off. I usually use Tote containers for this kind of work. They come in different sizes with the same general geometry that will fit one inside the other. Good luck.

Harbor freight sells a wireless driveway annunciator, battery powered. It is about $18, you can set it up to sense when a squirrel shows up and it will alert you, so you don’t have to watch for them. It will alert on birds too, and larger animals like raccoons too, so it isn’t fool proof, but it makes it easier than sitting and watching.

I use a battery powered Wi-Fi security camera which will alert me any where! 😆

Like I did a L shaped board on a tree trunk would word, here is is commercial example but if you have 2 pieces wood then you are good. You can go as simple tie a corn on the cob on a branch.

The Most simple is a Peanut Butter Bomb, I use them for deer and all kind of critters simple screw the cap off and Melt a hole through the cap, cut the bottom of the jar like a half moon

Nail or screw the jar to a tree, screw the jar back on so the cut is facing upwards to the tree and your ready to rock an roll, you can leave the jars up even when empty and throw some seed or any other bait you want into the jar

These are also great for Hog Hunting I go in and cut the wire to the speaker so just the light comes on set it in my blind and lazy away

Take it one more step, and wire in a on/off switch so you can choose or sound on if need be-

Made this for a friend. The plate is there to stop birds and rats from stealing the peanuts or whatever is used, and at the same time makes the squirrel work to get at the grub . You fill peanuts up top, and that inner piece of wood funnels it perfectly down so it’s a gravity fed design. The gap at the bottom of the funnel guarantees against shelled peanuts logging as its the perfect gap.

The round plate is screwed on loosely so it swings out of the way but always is closed when left alone.

All joints are attached with exterior screws and pre glued.
