I have had a small bottle of Ballistol in my gun room for years. I don't use it all that often. Today I went to use it and it's a little grainy. Does that stuff go bad?

I wouldn’t use it like it is. I didn’t think it would jell or get gummy. It is old! I wouldn’t doubt it could be 15-20 years old. I used it on a BPCR It is not a go to lubricant for me but I figured I would ask here.

Yeah, I think the that weighing out the potential damage it may cause versus the gain of using the product right now, should be the deciding factor.

I would just throw it out and buy a new fresh bottle of it........it's good stuff though. I use it often.

Googling around I found claims of an indefinete shelf life if kept sealed, another site said 25 years or more. Found nothing about becoming "grainy".

You must have contaminated it years ago and perhaps it’s fermenting. Fantastic product. Get a new bottle. Crow

Yeah, that's for sure off - though, I do think it's fair to say 20 years is a LONG time to be on a shelf. . ;-)

If anything, BTW, my guess is rust from moisture. Some oils are even hygroscopic and will suck moisture out of the air. If that was in a metal can, it may well have simply corroded.

What was the storage container? Glass, plastic, metal? If metal might be rust as mentioned above.

I love the stuff. After Hurricane Harvey I had to relocate my safes and toys to an non climate controlled building here in the tropics of Southeast Texas. I wiped everything down inside and out with Ballistol twice in the ten month period it took to rebuild our home . Everything survived in the same condition at the start. Great lube,cleaner and preservation.

This was a small plastic bottle with a flip up tip like lighter fluid from the old days. I dont think I contaminated it in any way. I poured it in a glass container to look at it and about a inch of it was solidified in the bottom. It is all in the trash. I have a new bottle I had ordered a month or so ago. Just thought I would share that it does go bad.

That sounds real strange. I was picturing some particulates or small amount of grit. I don't keep it long enough to go bad, use a ton of it. Regards
