Taipan Baptized the new Taipan Vet 2 today

I received a new Taipan .22 Long ADF with 700mm barrel last week. Mounted a new DNT Optics FFP 7 X 35 X 56mm 34mm scope on this rifle. It is strictly for the bench and although I did not weigh it I think it is a little over 12lbs with the 42oz 34mm scope.

I plan to use it for 30 and 40Y Target Challenge and also N50 50Y targets.

Today, I shot it at 52 yards at my local outdoor range. Got there at 8:40am, and had the range to myself …..for all of 15 minutes. Saturdays are crowded typically, but I had about an hour with only me and one other shooter.

I met a nice young man named Andrew who was 26 years old ( I’m 71) and he had a huge interest in Air Guns and my new Taipan. He has an M4 Impact and seemed to be very familiar with air rifles. I meet some of the nicest people at the range.

Distance: 52 yards
Group shooting and testing with pellets
Ammo: JSB 20.83g Lights and JTS 22.07g
Scope - see above
Wind: 3-7mph, with a fairly steady 4-5 mph
No Flags today since I started with group shooting
SST only, no mags today

A couple of initial impressions:

Front cocking lever is sublime and much better than my original rear cocking .25 Long Vet 1. A very crisp cocking cycle. One odd thing is that sometimes it did not cock. But, I figured out that if I pulled trigger thru release after firing each shot, it went back to cocking fully every time.

Trigger - about 6-8/10oz as I requested from Tony. Perfect for me. Crisp 1st stage stop with buttery smooth 2nd stage release

The Taipan moderator is very good, but when I took my muffs off, it did have a louder hammer strike. NP for me, as this is a BR gun.

Accuracy - 1st outing but it is impressive at 52Y with a fair amount of wind. The 22.07g JTS did much better than the 20.83 lights. However, I know the lights shoot very well from Dillon’s recent review. Tony tested with AEA 21.9g at 30 y, ragged hole and a 10 shot string <10 ES at 910 FPS average.

I plan to use this thread to do some testing with other pellets and occasionally will post results for other interested parties.

I did like the original Taipan Long Vet 1 .25 that I purchased several years back, but since it was rear cocking and I am a lefty, it was awkward reaching back over my shoulder to cock it on the left side of rifle, for me anyway. .

Very nice!!! And congratulations to your new Taipan!

The gun not cocking sometimes until you fully pull the trigger can be solved by way of adjusting the sear. The manual says don’t adjust the corresponding screws but that’s your problem right there (my vet 2 was doing the same, not uncommon).

Tobe - I knew someone would figure out my issue. Thanks!

p.s. A workaround that seemed to work for me was that I would fire a shot, then fully press/release trigger with no pellet in chamber, and then load another pellet and it would always cock. But, the sear adjustment you mentioned seems to be a better solution.

Congratulations! And what a shooter! Excellent groups, plus your Vet 2 has a beautiful laminated stock! I am the one who purchased Dillon's V2 550mm .22 and I found it also really likes the JSB/Fx 18gr @ 975fps FYI. Enjoy shooting it! 🤗 Oh....mines barrel likes NSA 20.2 .218 @ 940-950-ish fps ( better than FX Hybrids). Shooter1721 shot a 700mm V2 .22 and it shot FX Hybrids really well FYI....

Yep, you have to finely adjust a couple of the sear adjustments that they warn not to touch. But I figure that anything with threads is designed to turn!

Ed, you know me. You are the ‘trigger adjustment Czar’ for me. I will come over and we can do this together so I can watch and learn.

P.S. I am a bit of a slow learner with triggers. We fondly remember when I adjusted my Safari Red Wolf and it was shooting by itself without me touching trigger. You bailed me out, but that was humbling.

Where in the manual that says don't adjust the corresponding screws?

I got the same not cocking with my new Taipan Tac as well. I did however, adjust the sear tension and the second stage trigger tension by rotating the screw clockwise. The cocking problem has thus far went away.

I just went through the trigger-pull-to-cycle on my Vet 2 as well! Taipan sent me this. I ended up backing off on screw 1 in the image until the problem went away, closer to 2 turns. Increasing overtravel didn’t help since I have a soft trigger finger, so I set that as short as possible since I like my trigger break to feel like a button. No issues now for 200 shots, and the trigger has. 3 oz 1st stage and clean 2 oz second stage.

Congrats on the new gun! Since my cost/accuarcy thread, and based on suggestions there, I've been looking at the Vetran 2. I still like the more traditional style guns, but now realize that I might just have to give up that part of the equation to get the accuracy I want.
Thanks Ed. That was part of my logic as well when I was considering buying the Vet 2.

I also like really well built guns that shoot well right out of the box, with minimal tinkering.

Looks great Tommy! Yours really seems to like those JTS pellets! Both my Vet Long and the Vet2 preferred the JSB 20.83gr over the AEA 21.9gr and JTS 22.07gr. I wish they did with the superior BC but they at least yours likes them alot.
Thanks Dillon. I think the “Lights” will be pretty good also, but maybe need a different velocity.

For now the 22.07g shoot solid, but I need to also try the AEA 22.9g.

I'm having difficulty comparing that image to the photo here. Since the screw you reference appears to adjust a spring, I believe it is the second stage tension screw. And since you turned it a couple of complete turns, it is obviously not an engagement setting. If it worked, fine. Generally, the problem described is the result of insufficient sear engagement. That would involve some adjustment to the second stage travel screw, and/or the sear adjuster screw.

Bear with me guys. I know you are trying to help, still trying to understand several responses.

There are seven screws to the trigger assembly. I understand I have to adjust the Sear adjustment screw. Also perhaps the 2nd stage travel.

Can you be specific and use the Diagram to refer to exactly which screw needs to be turned, which direction ( CCW or CW ) and how much? As an example, “turn the 2nd stage Travel CCW 1 turn. Next, turn the Sear adjustment ….”

The last thing I want to do is screw up how it is now, which is perfect for me in terms of 1st and 2nd stage feel.

Thanks.

Looks like you got a shooter there Tom. Congratulation! How many shots are you getting before it’s off reg? Did you notice what your reg PSI is? Have you tried MRDs yet?
Hi Tim

I filled to 250 BAR for my last testing. Just checked air pressure and it is at 185 BAR right now. Ed ( EPG) mentioned that Taipan sets the reg up at 135 BAR.

I have a screen shot of my last shot string showing 34 shots fired. My guess is that I may get 50 - 60 shots if I ran it down to fall off regulator at 135 BAR. Next time out I will run it out all the way and post results.

WI’ll try 25.39 FX MRDs next session.

Nice shooting Tommy w/out flags!
The rifle is a performer
Those JTS are my go to pellets ..nice BC on them
I like that stool too ...looks easy to take with you to the range
Looking forward to what develops
Mike
Thanks Mike!

$49 from Cabellas. Good adjustment on both legs and up/down piston. Google Northern Frontier. It’s pretty solid for the price, folds up easy.

There are much more expensive and better stools, but for $50 this was easy.
