BCSA (Binghamton, NY) - June 3rd, 2023 Match Report
Broome County Sportsmens Association (BCSA) 2023FT Season continues and this time around we added a 40 shot HP FT match into the mix!!
The 17 competitors for the day started arriving just after 7 am. Brian V. was the first to arrive and as is usual, jumped right in and helped us set up the sight-in range. This time around, Doug and Betsy Dunlap were able to make the trip! We also had Rich and Brian Sarama make their first trip to our range and we also saw the return of Glenn Thomas after a short hiatus. Welcome and welcome back!
Yet another visitor for the day was this young squirrel! Not sure what happened to it’s Mom, but it decided to make us all family for the morning! Was very curious and kept checking everyone out. My wife Pat picked it up and took it and dropped it off further across the range only to have it keep following her back! Eventually something else caught the little boogers attention and we only saw it once more.
The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. The stats for the days 60 shot course are as follows:
Decent but slightly muggy weather for the day! Temps started in the low to mid 60’s and rose to the mid 70’s. Wind was light to moderate to non existent to gusty….Tricky conditions! There was one cold line to adjust 1 target and to move a fallen branch that was interfering with another of the targets. Had to add another shim to the blocks of the Egret target so that it would fall consistently without issue.
With the tricky twitchy winds and changing lighting, overall the scores were a bit all over. Brian Van Liew came out with Match High……..with a 44 out of 60 in Open Piston. Second highest score for the day (Hunter PCP) was a tie between Chuck Senkus and Jim Danvers………………..yep, second match in a row that ended with a tie between them! Both had a 42. Followed close behind the Tie Duo was Rick Vaeth with a 39 and Stephan Hottenrott with a 38! Congrats all! The rest of us mere mortals followed behind and the scores can be seen below.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, everyone jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets and pull the strings for the High Power targets. Thank You All! We then held a drawing to determine our 50/50 winner. This time we enlisted the help of Karen Reis to be the official ticket puller! After mixing up the tickets in the bucket, Karen reached in and picked one. The winning ticket that was drawn was hers!!!!! Congrats Karen!
Time for our first High Power Field Target match! The layout consisted of 5 lanes with 4 targets per lane. All sitting shots with no standing lanes this time around, The targets consisted of 2 donated Paul Porch targets along with 2 purchased S & S targets that are sold as 20 fpe targets. Yep, we used them with power levels up to 80 fpe at the muzzle. The other 16 targets are modified Gamo/Crosman frames with another donation of plain ol rectangular faceplates I drew up.
12 Competitors for the inaugural BCSA HP FT match! We opted for 2 person squads with one squad on stand by until the lane ahead cleared for them. No cold lines and I think everything went well! I hope others weigh in with their thoughts on how they thought it went! We allowed slugs alongside pellets. Everything fared well, so for the time being, we will continue this way when we run HP matches. We will be upping the difficulty as time goes on.
The full stats for the HP match are:
And as always, after the match was finished, everyone remaining jumped in and we made super quick work of the cleanup! All the help is GREATLY appreciated! Overall it was a great day to spend with our field target friends!
