Beginner help needed - please be nice - air rifle .177

Did you ask the 4H instructor(s) and visit with others (parents or kiddos) who are practicing with your kiddo? My son did not stick with the classes, kind of likes doing his own thing. I just recall the instructor was full of info and the kids had some nice rifles that they seemed custom to them. The 4H community seems very helpful. Good luck!

RIFLEThe Sporter Air Rifle is intended to be a low cost, entry-level rifle without specialized modifications that add to the cost of the rifle. Sporter air rifles must be .177 caliber (4.5 mm) pneumatic, spring air, compressed air, or CO2 rifles with a muzzle velocity of 600 fps or less that comply with these requirements:4.2.1 Approved Air Riflesa) Air Rifles officially approved for Sporter Class air rifle competitions are the Air Force Air Guns Edge, Crosman CH2000 (CO2), Crosman CH2009 (CO2 or compressed air), Crosman CH2021 (CA), Daisy M599 Competition Air Rifle, Daisy M853/753/953/853CM (pneumatic), Daisy 888/887 (CO2), Daisy XSV40 Valiant (compressed air), Air Arms T200 (compressed air, with non-adjustable cheek-piece and butt-plate) and the Champions Choice T200 (CZ 200T, compressed air, with adjustable cheek-piece and butt-plate). Daisy 887/888 rifles may have 2010 model replacement stocks. b) Rule 4.2.1 approval of an air rifle as a legal Sporter Class air rifle confirms that a specific air rifle fulfills Rule 4.2.1 requirements for velocity, function, cost, weight,

everyone should spend the time to read the rules first

ideally the Daisy 853-853c would be a good choice and as a member of some sort of group you should able to get them from

New to air Rifle. My kiddo does 4H Shooting sports .22 rifle events and now wants to add air rifle. Any help is greatly appreciated. We have to purchase at least 2. One for silhouette and one for 3P. Need ideas that won't break the bank.
Hello @mommyof4four ,

Your very best bet is to not rush into buying any gun until you have visited with the person or persons that sponsor these events and ask them what guns are allowed in the event that you daughter will be active. Also if possible talk with several of the current competitors and question them about the gun that they are using.

If your daughter really enjoys the sport of "shooting", then the gun you buy can serve her well into many years of pleasure shooting  .

I have owned both the Crosman Challenger PCP and the Daisy Model 599 and I returned the Daisy because it would not shoot MOA at 10-Meters. On the other hand the Crosman was dead on accurate right out of the factory box.

Good luck and welcome to the Forum,
ThomasT

Thank you so much. We need as soon as possible. I keep hearing the Crosman Challenger, so I may bite the bullet and buy 2 of those. She went to Daisy Nationals in BB last year and is now aged out of that. She has also been shooting .22 3P and .22 CMP Open sights, but has never even shot an air rifle. I know to go back to Daisy Nationals this year as an Air Rifle competitior she will have to use a Daisy. But I also want her to be competitive thru 4H. I know the 4H Nationals team from Louisiana all used Crossman Challengers this past year. Just wasn't expecting the huge hit to the wallet. LOL. Is the Daisy 599 as accurate as the Crosman Challenger in 10M events?
Welcome and.....do you see that hole over there to the right? Well that is the Rabbit Hole®, it has many branches and seems to go down forever. In it you will experience joy, terror, fun, frustration and most of all, money draining experiences, oh and not so fleeting elation when it all just seems to come together. Enjoy the trip, there is a lot of experience here at AGN and support. Again, welcome.

I’m finding that out!! lol.

Welcome to sport shooting. The recommendation for the CMP rifle is a good one. I looked at a couple last time I shot at the Anniston AL range and refurbished rifles were about $160. They looked good and I’m told they shoot well. I bought a new Beeman AR 2048A and it’s been good, uses two 12mg co2 cartridges for about 55 shots in .177. I think it was $350 with a little tuning work. There’s a YouTube channel called Airgun Detectives that reviewed this rifle. There’s quite a lot here in the classified section that would do well. I’ve bought two there and been very happy. About to get two more. Not new but usually in good condition and you can save on cost. You’ve gotten several good suggestions already. Give yourself a budget and you’ll find rifles that do the job in that price range. Just make sure to have fun.

Well Daisy 599 came in shot twice less than 1 hour total and had to send back. Leaking air out barrel and trigger kept coming off. Defect in wood cutout causing the trigger issue. They are sending another. 753s is giving her and her coach troubles with sighting in. Yay. Crosman Challenger supposed to be in today. We will try that one for silhouettes and the Daisy 599 for 3p if the new one works.

Relatively old thread, I know, but this link has refurbed Daisy M853's for $125 and 753S's for $210. Good price for newbies. I would go with the 853 and just add the Gamo sights equivalent later for newbies. A lot of JROTC's use these. Parts are easy to get, they're pumps so cheap to operate.
