Beginner Wind Flags

I have Graham rimfire flags, single vane. Double vane is probably better because I do sometimes catch myself blinking to check whether they’re angled in or out. I didn’t choose double vane because of their size.

Rimfire flags are more sensitive than centerfire wind flags. I think the pinwheels are kinda of heavy and reserved for centerfire.

I’m also contemplating sail tails instead of surveyor ribbon.
For what it's worth I bought a pair of double vane flags for the 400 and 500 yard lines. They are no easier to see than a single vane the same size. You need bigger in my opinion. Sail tails come in different stiffness. First set I bought where not responsive enough. I got a second set with lighter material in raspberry and love them. The raspberry color really stands out plus I got them a bit wider and that really helped also with visibility.

Here's different weight tails. If one wants to use light tails these plastic food bags you get are the lightest I use. Easy to make and fit with good visibility.

I am no expert but I made myself a few wind flags from old political yard signs, bits of hardwood, and Styrofoam balls from hobby lobby. Wire from the yard sign is driven into the ground to support them. The head is a ball on one end painted half red, a wood block for a pivot and a rectangular piece of the sign on the other end. The rectangular piece has a strip cut from caution tape. They are a lot better than nothing and cost nearly nothing. The yard sign wire proved to be a little light and has been changed to 3/16 inch rod for the upright.
