Beginner's guide to Field Target rangefinding

Thanks buddy, I just "bookmarked" it for future reference.

PHeplerNC,

Plus one for you. Even though I'm not a competition shooter, I like target shooting and hunting with my airguns. Now for the first time I see the advantage of this information. I know that if I implement what this video teaches, I could increase my accuracy in hunting and target shooting. I've avoided the temptation to buy a large wheel for my scope. Now I'll be looking for one and learning how to use it.

Thanks

Thanks!

Brass or Aluminum strip bought at my local hardware store, a little bending by hand, and a few pop rivets and you're in business!

If it was painted black I would use white electrical tape for my markings, covered with a layer of clear packing tape to protect the marks. I chose to keep it brass and just use clear packing tape for both my markings and a protective layer.

Do you guys rangefind at the same magnification you used to mark your scopewheel ? I use a Tac Vector 10 40 with the scopewheel marked for yardages at 36x. I noticed that if I rangefind at 24x, the markings are off.

What i do now is

Rangefind at 36x to find yardage

Then switch to 16x to shoot using holdover values charted at 16x for said yardage. I have a problem with scope shake at 36x. Need more practice.

i now use 16x and 36x only and the results are more consistent.

What's your experience?

I've been told most all "first focal plane" scopes will range differently at different magnification settings. So if you plan on changing mag you pretty much have to work out your holdover for the mag you intend to use. Many open class or WFTF shooters lower their mag for offhand as they feel more stable. Hunter class Field target does not allow any adjustments during the match (besides parallax) so I leave my scope set at 16x- the maximum allowed for Hunter class FT by the AAFTA rules.

STRONGLY suggest the range marking be done AT THE MAGNIFICATION you will be using while at said FT matches. ( Hunter classes 16X )

ALSO mark your ocular focus where it was set while doing the wheel range markings. Changes in ocular focus will change wheel yardage calibration !! Unless returned to this ocular position your ranging distances won't jive.

BTW ... if shooting under AAFTA Hunter rules ... YOU CAN AT NO TIME ADJUST X POWER ABOVE THE 16X maximum legal limit in the HUNTER CLASSES.

So to range at 32x and return to 16X for the shot would be considered cheating.

Open class or WFTF it don't mater and perfectly legal during a match.

I use a child's snow sled so it pulls smoothly. set a trap on it and stick a bottle brush on top also. Then attach a long tape measure to the sled. Start at the longest distance you want and your tape can reach. You can measure half way out first if need be and put in a marker if your tape isn't long enough. Then just reel in the tape in whatever increments you want and make each mark on the sidewheel. Something like a bottle brush that has a lot of detail and some depth to it is a good target to focus on. You can also take some shots on paper at each distance to mark your turret.

Great idea!

I know this is an old post, but, thank you so much for sharing this! I'm a new member but an older airgunner. Between your video and another post I read about an easy method to remove scope cant, I feel I'm going to get a bit more performance out of my optics!

Absolutely!
Others and I have some great videos with tips and tricks to help along the way. Glad it helped!

As stated the second focal plan scopes will have different hold overs at different magnification. That is the advantage of a first focal plane scop.

I have a Soghtron SIII and I use 50X to get my ranges on my scope wheel. But use 16X to get my hold overs. I also am very specific to ALWAYS move my wheel the same direction till I get in focus, if I come from the other direction I will get inconsistent yardages.
