I've just started PCP shooting and this is probably a dumb question, but what is the difference between benchrest and field target shooting? I did a quick browse through those two forums and they seem the same, just shooting at a target from a stationary position.

FT presents: Uneven ground, incline/decline, wind from different angles due to course design, rangefinding, rig exposed to the elements (sun, rain, etc), ergonomics of specialized rigs, positionals (kneeling, standing besides seated), for Hunter shooting from a bucket or similar platform, different sized kill zones, just to name a few.

Field Target has numerous differences and brackets, or divisions and a bench is not involved at all. Shooting must be done from shooting sticks, off hand, off knee or seated and using the body for support only. The distances on FT events are not know and must calculated by the shooter and the shots are at reactive type targets vs. paper bullseyes just to name a few things. A search for an actual match video or FT rules would be the best way to see.

Unlimited "sighters" in benchrest (ie, figure out conditions during the match by shooting "sighters" )

Every shot counts in Field Target (ie. gotta be intimately familiar with your gun, knowing all the dope data for various distances and wind values).

Benchrest = shooting from a solid, sometimes concrete bench. Some guys only touch the trigger, to the point that some benchrest guns don't even have a stock that the shooter can nug up to the shoulder and actually hold the gun. Some classes even allow electronic triggers so even the trigger is not touched by the shooter (ie, the bench is holding the gun/short range artillery)

Field Target = the shooters body supports and holds the gun.

The scoring is quite different as well. In FT you score a point when the target falls, or no point if the target doesn't fall, even if you did hit the paddle through the hole in the target face. In Benchrest each shot placement is scored to the specific scoring ring or center dot point value. You can hit every target and still lose the match depending on how close your shots were to the center of the target.

In simpler and more defining terms ...

Benchrest is generally shot at 2 distances ( tho never at same time ) 25Y/M and 50Y/M
Your shooting off a solid bench using a machine rest or bags.
*Game is to shoot the closest too a bullseye for a score based on ring value scoring.
* you can take practice shots on target card edges at any time during the match to check poi

Field Target is shot from 10 to 55 yards ( Each target is different )
You have no idea what the distance is to said target & must determine it, correct holdover for it and shoot 2 shots per target only !
* No sighters, no poi check shots etc ... Take an extra shot at any time costs you a miss.
Game is to shoot THREW a kill zone hole in target face having target fall down if successful. KZ Hole sizes go from @ 1/2" to 2" in size.
You only get score if target falls !!
Shooter rests rifle on his body in WFTF & Open with some apparatus allowances. Hunter can use an unattached bipod & tall seat / bucket to sit on.

Just a rough outline ... COMPLETELY different game !!!!
