Benjamin Trail NP XL 1500 Sighting in help needed!

Make sure the barrel is clean and try five shots at 10 meters. If they don’t group tightly try a different pellet for five more shots and compare group sizes. It could just be the gun is pellet picky. I’m more intrigued by the scope going out of focus. If the group sizes don’t improve then try a different scope with two or three different pellets in five shot groups. If nothing improves then there is a mechanical issue in the gun. I have a Trail that will split cards consistently so I know it can be an excellent gun. This is your third copy? Something is fishy.

I don't like to speak poorly of any particular models/brands, but from my experience those break barrels seem 50/50 on quality. I've had a few experiences with them and they seem to shoot too hot for their own good. Try a heavier pellet and that might help (you are perhaps going too fast on the velocity). If you are looking for a quality adult springer, look at the Hw95, Tx200, hw77, hw30 etc for precision and heirloom quality. I know that recommendations for something better isn't great when you want a solution for what you have, so that is why I said try heavier pellets first. Make sure they are match grade too. A good Springer like the models referenced above can shoot a walnut reliably at 50y.

PS: Crosman has some of the finest customer support in the industry, so you should get this resolved if you truly want it to be. They do have some great rifles on the PCP side of things like the Mrod/Prod, Craftsman series, and the Bulldog, but their springers are just not that great in comparison. I have had some good friends that love their Trails and swear by them. I've had friends that swear at their Trails too. I suppose a bit of both with that one?

Hannigan,
First, if you'll indulge me, I'd like to recognize the excellent responses and information you've been given, makes me proud to be a member of this forum. Second, what happened to the OEM Centerpoint 3x9-40 scope that came with gun? I'd re-install to rule out a problem with the current scope. Neighbor sold me the same gun, in .22, for $25, claimed it belonged in the town dump for such poor accuracy. I cleaned barrel, did minor trigger modification, found preferred pellet and learned artillery hold. She's been a good shooter ever since. I added this Centerpoint scope mount system since eye relief wasn't proper with factory set-up, at least for me. WM

My Benji Trail NP Elite is fairly pellet picky. Hates JSB/AA pellets. Scatters them everywhere. Not bad with RWS. Loves H&N FTT. Might try a few different brands to see if yours is.

Edit: ”The scope goes out of focus”? Is it slipping in the rings? Did you set torque with a wrench? Make a markup with silver paint marker, small piece of Scotch tape or something and see if the scope is moving.

I am 68 years young. I have shot springers for 30 plus years. I love them. I also tell it like it is...uh oh....Grin!!
That particular rifle is a piece of (most likely cannot say that)
Besides the simple fact they are very poorly made and none of them are accurate, I have shot them and with all my experience if I can obtain a 1.5 inch group with one of these at 25 yards it is time for a celebration.
I do not accept all the Urban tales and legends, such as it needs to be broke in, it was windy.....come on at 25 yards that excuse does not fly.
Simply having your cheek one fraction of an inch different on a shot, or your trigger finger one smidgeon different with that one makes a lot of difference.
You will never enjoy that rifle if you shoot it for the next ten years as it will never ever actually be accurate. Regardless of what you do it will only cause frustration.

In contrast early this morning I shot my new Gamo Gen 3i .22 fusion and a 1.5 in group at 35 yards was all it would do. Disgusted I went into the house and picked up one of my HW95 rifles and put a ten shot group at 35 yards all in a dime sized group. I am happy again and time for another cup of coffee. Grin!!

Time all of us stopped making excuses for products and brands that are simply (that word I cannot say) Grin!

It has been years, how many, do not remember but it was when Ted Holdover was young and just getting started. He had one of these and at 20 yards he put over twenty different kinds of pellets through it, he finally gave up and conceded that a 1.5 inch group was all it would ever do. I got tickled at him with that one. He was getting quite disgusted. Now he is a PCP shooter and that NP Trail might have something to do with that.

Cheers
Kit

Thanks for all of the help! I am glad I found this site. I will take all of the advice and try working with this rifle. Although, based on what you all have said, it looks like I should just get a Weihrauch HW97 KT. I enjoy target practice at long ranges. What are your thoughts on this rifle? Any help is greatly appreciated. And again, thanks for letting a newbie here to get so much assistance.

You might try for a hw77 (same gun but slightly different stock and no bonded moderator...has iron sites but accepts scopes too).

Honestly any of those Weihrauchs are perfection.

Thanks for the help everyone. Anyone know who has a HW97K Synthetic .177 in stock? Been searching with no results.

Airguns of Arizona most likely has one. If not they can tell you when. Free shipping and a lifetime warranty when you buy from them. You cannot go wrong with a HW97 of any variable. The most accurate of all air rifles and they are quite forgiving of the shooter also. Not so hold sensitive as most. Kinda expensive though......well worth it every dime, just kinda a shock to some with the price. The first time you set up a target at 20 yards and see that group you will say.....this is cheating lets go to 50.
Cheers

Hannigan,
Please note I stated the Benjamin Trail NP XL .22 is a "good" shooter for me, I've got six PCPs that are "great" shooters. I'd be upset with the gun if I'd paid the $250 my neighbor paid, but for $25, can't feel bad. For pesting medium-size critters at shorter ranges the gun is a powerhouse with the H&N Sniper Magnums (17.90 grain.) I'll admit for most target and pesting work I grab a PCP, but occasionally enjoy using the Benjamin, until the 37-pound cocking effort gets old. WM

And its a gun that comes with factory sights.. not a scope only and there you sit with this issue wondering and scratching your head . If it shoots straighter and true with irons then you kinda know it aint a scope issue.. you gun had sights to be able to o shoot it when scopes just aint working out. Not wishing you can shoot it.
