At first glance, on the surface the TEXtreme Airgun Sports AAFTA-style matches last weekend might seem a bit disappointing, considering only nine rifle shooters showed up for Saturdays rifle match. However if One (match director) looks closer
, One can discern some bright sides.
For instance, it being the last opportunity for actual FT competition before the RoT State Championships, several of the nine taking advantage of that opportunity rank among the best FT shooters in Texas and Oklahoma. In other words, national caliber. Myself being an avid hunter, I understand how some sportsmen might not want to miss out on opening day (and weekend) of deer season for an FT match; one possible reason for the light turn-out. Opening day/weekend is a pretty big deal in Texas.
Another bright side is finally being able to reap the fruits of labor working the land, lanes and targets into an excellent and challenging field target course. In other words, finally getting to enjoy the course of my own making. Thatās always sweet.
A yet even brighter side is winning. My rifle score of 47/56 was not only enough for the win, but confirmed my rifle FT rig as ready for The Big Show as Iād hoped and thought. The Daystate Wolverine (āWolveyā) is topped with a new (to me) 4-16X Bushnell Elite 4200 scope, and shoots 10.3 grain FX pellets about 900 FPS. It was almost as gratifying to shoot the high Forced Positions score of 6/8 in the match, including 3 of 4 points on the Kneeling Lane shooting offhand.

Jim Clarke finished Second Place with a fine 43/56, also hitting 3 of 4 Kneeling shots. Jimās Red Wolf wears a Sightron S3, and likes 13.43 grain Air Arms ammo. Great shooting, Jim.
Mark Welker was third with a 42/56, shooting the new 10.5 grain Benjamins at 904 FPS in his Sightron S3 scoped USFT rifle. He also hit 3 of 4 Kneeling shots. Good shooting, Mark.
Yet another bright side to the weekend was eight shooters contesting Sundays pistol match; relatively speaking, a great turn-out! A bonus was Jeff Cloud not only shooting his new RAW TM1000 pistol, but letting everyone else try it out on the practice range before the shooters meeting. Suffice to say ITāS AWESOME! To further whet your appetite for more information, Jeff dropped only ONE point of 54 freestyle shots in the pistol match.
However Mark Welker was the pistol Match Winner with a fine score of 55. Mark shot the .177 RonCo BroCo Gen 1 prototype pistol that he stole from fellow Okie Jon Wren, who stole it from The Beastās creator (Me). The Beast wore a Sightron, and shot 8.4 grain Exacts at 800 FPS. Awesome shooting, Mark!
Pablo Bracagliano was second in the pistol competition with a fine 53 score. Pablo shot 8.44 pellets in his Crosman 1720T, topped with a 12X Aeon scope. Good shooting, Pablo.
Jeff Cloud tied Pabloās score of 53, however the Offhand lane tie-breaker relegated Jeff to third place. Jeffās RAW wore a Sightron S3 scope, and shot 8.44 grain JSBs at 12.00000001 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Fortunately for Jeff, the Rules Nazi Match Director recognizes muzzle energies only to the seventh decimal place!
Iāll now dispel all your beliefs Iāve overlooked stating how many shots there were in the pistol match. I didnāt. In true āthere are methods to my madnessesā fashion, that neglect was by design.
Also true to my mad designs, Iāll give ONE more clue designed to stimulate thinking
before divulging the pistol match shot-count. As is common, the top three podium places were decided by the Offhand lane. With a little math and this final hint, One might be able to draw certain conclusions regarding scores that you might have been wondering about. There were 54 freestyle shots, and the pistol match was 60 shots.
Match Winner awards were a Match Winner hat-pin inside a TEXtreme Airgun Sports large pellet tin inside a TEXtreme Airgun Sports small pellet tin. Other podium placers received one TEXtreme Airgun Sports pellet tin.
I must apologize for not having calculated course Troyers for either match. No excuses. However both courses were mid-thirties Troyer; educated guess 35-37T without difficulty multipliers. Quite tricky winds in both matches certainly justify the 1.25X wind multiplier.
Before the rifle match shooters meeting we had a door-prize drawing for a .177 PelletGage, courtesy of PelletGage Jerry Cupples. Although I donāt recall who won it, thank you Jerry!
